A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 238

Iris rose slightly on her toes, furious.

"Nonsense! I have Holden to protect me! The detention center already called him. He's going to bail his mother out tomorrow."

Hah!

If Iris thought that was a threat, she had vastly miscalculated.

Madeleine was recovering from cancer surgery. The detention center's medical evaluation wouldn't pass her, so the police would mandate she be released on medical parole anyway. Even if she was eventually sentenced, she'd serve it outside of prison. It meant nothing.

As for Madeleine turning on her? Iris wasn't worried in the slightest. Madeleine owed her a debt she could never repay in a lifetime; she would protect Iris at all costs.

Winifred didn't say another word. She grabbed her bag and walked away.

Watching Winifred's calm, unbothered retreat, the tough words Iris had just spat felt like ash in her mouth.

Deep down, she was terrified.

Holden was picking Madeleine up tomorrow, but that was just the beginning of the nightmare. Roland Lockwood had already drafted divorce papers. The moment Madeleine was out, he was going to sever ties and publicly announce the end of their marriage to save the family's reputation.

The Lockwood family scandal was escalating, and she was getting dragged down with it.

She couldn't even stomach looking at the entertainment news anymore. Nine out of ten articles were dissecting the family's disgrace, dragging her name into the mud with baseless rumors. The internet trolls were having a field day, orchestrating campaigns to ruin her image. She was already fragile, and the past two days she had only managed to sleep by taking heavy doses of pills. Her anxiety was suffocating.

Desperate, Iris quickly dialed Holden's number.

"Baby~ where are you?" she asked, her voice trembling with tears.

Holden immediately went on high alert. "Who upset you? Don't cry."

"It's Winifred, she..."

Amidst the chaotic shoving, her mind spun.

Had they pulled him over to their side?

Before this moment, she would have sworn the answer was no. When Leland saved her, he had made his stance publicly clear. He had called her flawless and warned that anyone who attacked her would have to deal with him. He had sworn he wasn't like Holden.

But now, Winifred wavered.

She had never seen Yvette act so sweet and attentive to anyone. And the fact that Leland was standing there, letting her talk to him privately, meant he must be enjoying it.

Maybe there really was no such thing as a loyal man.

When he promised her she was flawless, it just meant he hadn't yet met someone he considered more flawless. The moment someone better came along, he'd toss her aside just like the rest.
