Holden, the absolute last person who had any right to dig up her past, had forced his way back into it.
She had been locked in the Admonition Cell, thrown into a dark room, starved and frozen for twenty-one days. When she found out she was pregnant, she begged Arthur for a chance to call Holden. And what was the result? He was busy planning his engagement to Iris.
When she was diagnosed with quadruplets, she went to find him again, only to see him picking out a diamond engagement ring for the other woman.
She had left in total despair.
What awaited her was absolute devastation...
Piece by piece, he was ripping her scars open, laying her trauma bare. Holden was taking a knife and methodically torturing her all over again.
It hurt so much.
And yet, he kept going. "Winifred, I am so sorry! I know... I know three years of repentance isn't enough. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you."
A hand reached out and wrapped around her slender waist as his chest pressed against her shoulder.
She sprang back violently, as if electrocuted.
Raising the heavy sledgehammer, she pointed it right at him, tears streaming down her face as she roared, "You soulless piece of trash! I am deeply ashamed and utterly disgusted that I ever loved a man like you!"
"Winifred..." He took a large step forward.
"Don't you dare come near me!" The sledgehammer was aimed squarely at his head.
"Just listen to me explain..."
"I don't want to hear a single word out of your mouth! You are the scum of the earth! You reek of Iris, you are filthy and vicious, and your hands are stained with the sins of trying to murder me! You are a monster, worse than an animal!"
If others bullied her, she could chalk it up to human nature and ruthlessness in the face of profit.
But when Holden betrayed her, she couldn't find a single reason to let it go.
She had been his wife!
For his sake, she had taken the fall for everything, giving him the perfect way out.
While he and Iris were living it up, she had told herself, *'I don't blame you.'*
For him, she had lost their first child, then lost two more during her second pregnancy. She gave birth to the remaining twins without ever setting foot in a hospital, recovering from childbirth all alone, holding her two babies by herself...
For three years, she had drained herself completely dry just to survive.
She hadn't blamed him at all.
And yet...
"Holden! Lockwood! I'll kill you!" Disoriented by the onslaught, she tried to find her hands, realizing she was still gripping the heavy iron hammer.
"Mmph..."
Suddenly, wet, hot lips captured hers. He swallowed her protests.
"Mmph... mmph!" She struggled wildly.
As she fought against him, another voice tore through the air, screaming with a shredded kind of agony.
"Winifred! What the hell are you doing?!"
She froze.
It was Leland.
Leland was here? Had he found the graveyard on his own?
Almost instantly, the image of him laughing and joking with Yvette earlier floated into her mind.
...She stopped struggling.
