She went entirely limp in his arms.
Holden’s kiss slowly came to a halt. Cupping her cheeks, his burning skin pressed against hers as broken, desperate words slipped from his lips. "Winifred, I love you."
Before the words could even settle, Leland’s enraged roar ripped through the air.
"Winifred! Give me an explanation! Right now!"
Judging by the sound, Winifred guessed Leland was standing directly in front of her, about fifteen feet away. Between them sat a large planter.
In the center of the planter grew a towering green pine, surrounded by bright yellow chrysanthemums currently in full bloom. Through the vibrant green branches and golden petals, Leland stared at her and Holden.
Leland had completely lost it.
The raw, tearing scream completely shattered his usual elegant, aristocratic demeanor.
And this was exactly the outcome Winifred wanted.
"Let go of me for a second," she said to Holden.
Her voice was surprisingly gentle, almost obedient.
Joy instantly lit up Holden’s handsome face. Thrilled, he gripped her shoulders and stared deeply into her eyes. "You understand me now, don't you? You don't hate me anymore, right?"
She lowered her eyelashes. "I need to handle some personal business first."
"Okay!" he agreed, overflowing with excitement. "Winifred..."
She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. His neck was flushed red, thick veins bulging like earthworms squirming beneath his skin.
He was completely unhinged, spiraling without limits! Whatever sick new game he was playing, it was bound to be dangerous.
A rare sense of panic flared in her chest.
She looked back at Leland, who was still raging at her from across the pine and chrysanthemums.
"Why would you do this to me?!" Leland yelled hoarsely.
Winifred met his gaze with chilling indifference. "You know why."
Leland pointed a shaking finger at Holden. "Buying me the exact same outfit as him—what is the meaning of this?!"
Holden immediately snapped his attention away from Leland, glancing down at his own polo shirt, cargo pants, and hiking boots. A smirk crept onto his lips. "Isn't it obvious? In her eyes, you're nothing but my understudy."
He seemed to reach a conclusion.
Turning back, he stared directly at Winifred. "You... you broke my heart. But I still want an answer. I finish what I start, and if I want you, I take responsibility. Tell me right now. Do you want him? Or do you want me? Pick one!"
Winifred watched Leland glaring fiercely at his rival.
She also saw the murderous glint hiding in Holden’s eyes.
The two of them had engaged in a very male standoff, measuring each other up.
It was obvious Holden was waiting too, waiting for her to choose him, to hear the answer straight from her lips.
"Neither," she said, pulling her gaze away from both men.
"Winifred?!"
Holden was the closest, so she heard his voice first. He sounded genuinely shocked, clearly never expecting her to reject him.
Leland’s fists clenched tightly at his sides. "Say that again?!"
