Before dawn, the Lockwood Mansion was already brightly lit.
Everyone—whether they wanted to get out of bed or not—was awake.
It felt like a day destined for an explosive, sensational scandal.
Yvette, adopting an attitude of complete indifference to her family's impending chaos, had dressed up in a stunning, glamorous outfit. She was heading out to have some fun, intent on finding a sweet, innocent guy she had her eye on the day before.
In the living room, Iris kept Holden company as he went through his morning routine of reading the financial news.
Seeing Yvette strutting down the grand staircase looking incredibly sexy, Iris called out from across the room with a playful smile. "Wow, looking gorgeous, Yvette! Who are you trying to seduce today?"
Yvette walked like she was on a runway.
Her straight blonde hair swayed with every confident, swaying step she took. She oozed absolute charisma.
"I'm going to find Leland. I'm heading back to Kingsbridge tomorrow."
So, she really had set her sights on the billionaire heir.
Iris pouted inwardly.
Today, at least, she wasn't worried about Yvette running into Leland and Winifred together.
Her capable, devoted Holden had heard about Winifred insulting her yesterday and had taken immediate revenge. He had successfully torn the two apart, making Leland abandon Winifred.
Winifred was once again pushed into isolated, helpless despair.
That meant Leland was a free agent. He could have a new woman anytime.
However...
Iris didn't actually support Yvette going after him either.
Yvette was six years older than Leland, wild, and rebellious. The legitimate heir of a top-tier billionaire family wouldn't marry a bossy, domineering woman who acted like a mother figure.
Still, Iris put on a fake, agreeable smile, trying to subtly dissuade her.
"Mr. Lockwood might have flown back to Kingsbridge last night."
"No, no, no." Yvette checked her reflection in the glass doors of the wine cabinet, fixing a slightly smudged spot of lipstick. "He told me yesterday he wasn't leaving yet. He still has business here."
Iris glanced at Holden.
Yvette was being too aggressive; it made her look desperate. Someone in the family needed to step in and talk some sense into her.
But Holden kept his eyes glued to his newspaper.
Unable to hold back, Iris tugged gently at his suit jacket.
He glanced over. "What is it?"
It was painful to watch.
Holden looked away.
But the floodgates were open, and the emotional undertow dragged Yvette down into the dark abyss of her resentment.
"I was born into this family, but was I ever loved? Was I ever valued?"
"Growing up, Dad was never home. And when he occasionally showed up, he only had eyes for you!"
"And Mom... her entire life revolved around keeping a man tied down."
"To give Dad the son he desperately wanted, she spent years taking every fertility treatment under the sun. She was so obsessed with having a boy that when she had her third child and found out I was a girl, she didn't even look at me. She just told the nanny to take me away."
"I ate and slept in the nanny's quarters. Before I could even speak, she was pregnant with her fourth child."
Yvette bit her lip.
Tears finally spilled over.
The raw pain turned her face a sickly, pale hue.
"When she finally got pregnant with the son she had prayed for, she was so thrilled she moved abroad to protect the pregnancy."
