"Shut your mouth! Stop making things up!" Madeleine shrieked.
Winifred's gaze slid coolly to Holden. "And Holden... he's your accomplice."
"My guess is, if you end up dying out here, you're planning to drag Holden down to hell with you."
"You—!!" Unable to handle the provocation, Madeleine collapsed against Holden's chest.
Holden glared at Winifred, his eyes like daggers.
"You've got some nerve, Winifred. Throwing around threats like it's nothing. Keep talking, and I'll stitch your mouth shut."
Winifred sneered. "You should be worrying about your mother, your precious Arthur, and your sweet Iris."
"Watch what you say. If you keep slandering my mother and my fiancée without proof, I'll sue you for defamation. Let's see who comes to save you then."
Holden threw a pointed look at Leland.
Catching his drift, Iris immediately jumped in.
"Your luck has run out, Winifred! You can't rely on Leland to save you this time!"
Leland had been standing in total silence this whole time, making it obvious he was completely over Winifred.
If they pushed her now, who was going to step up for her?
Following their gaze, Winifred glanced at Leland.
Sensing an opening, Iris pressed her attack. "Scared? Trying to figure out how to cling to him for protection again? Let me break it to you: Leland is my sister-in-law Yvette's man. You know exactly how incredible Yvette is. Now that he has her, he won't spare you a second glance."
"Is that so?"
"Of course it is," Iris boasted proudly. "Yvette told him yesterday she's giving him a chance to pursue her."
Wow, that was fast. They were already at the "pursuing" stage?
This was actually beyond what Winifred had expected.
"Congratulations," she said.
Leland deflated instantly, like a punctured balloon. "Really?"
Winifred simply parroted what she'd just heard. "Ms. Yvette is beautiful, kind, and incredibly successful. So many men are chasing her. If you managed to win her over, you have my blessing."
"Thank you. You're too kind." Leland stepped back, returning to his spot on the absolute periphery of the conversation.
Madeleine, however, looked like she'd just been injected with adrenaline.
She practically sprang back to life, her eyes shining. "Yvette? She's dating Leland?"
Thoroughly enjoying the chance to infuriate Winifred, Iris raised her voice. "Yes! They had a great time chatting at the foot of Emerald Mountain yesterday. Yvette even lowered her standards and said she'd give him a chance to pursue her."
Overjoyed, Madeleine looked at Leland with a mother-in-law's fond approval.
"My daughter has always been proud and had the highest standards. If she chose you, consider yourself the luckiest man alive."
