As Holden and Winifred traded sarcastic barbs, Iris took the opportunity to sneak a glance at Leland.
His eyes were dead, his face devoid of any expression. He looked completely detached from the situation.
To him, Winifred might as well have been invisible.
He didn't care what she did.
Iris felt a surge of admiration for Holden. His read on people was terrifyingly accurate. Leland and Winifred were definitely on the rocks.
Suddenly, the massive iron gates rattled loudly as they swung open.
The bickering stopped instantly.
Everyone's attention snapped to the figure stepping out into freedom: Madeleine.
Holden immediately sprinted forward to greet her.
Iris watched him go, admiring how dashing he looked.
Then, her gaze shifted to her mother-in-law.
Madeleine stood shivering in the biting wind, supported by a female officer.
She was hunched over, her back deeply bowed. Her hair had turned completely white, loose strands blowing across her face. Her cheekbones protruded sharply, and her skin had a sickly, grayish-black pallor. She looked like a wandering ghoul straight out of a horror movie.
She had only been locked up for a few days, and she already looked like this?
Iris quickly masked her disdain.
Back when she had been homeless on the streets of New York, sleeping next to drunks and drinking half-empty sodas out of the trash, she hadn't even looked this repulsive.
Reluctantly, she took a few steps forward to put on a show of greeting her.
After all, she was Holden's fiancée, and Madeleine was her future mother-in-law.
She had to perform her filial duty for Holden's sake.
Supported by her son, Madeleine forced a weak smile. "Iris... you came too?"
"Of course, Mom." Since she had officially started dating Holden three years ago, she had moved into the Lockwood Mansion and immediately started calling her "Mom."
She always played the part of the devoted daughter-in-law in public.
Having played her part, Iris stepped neatly behind Holden, playing the supportive partner.
Madeleine craned her neck, scanning the area.
The two women locked eyes.
Madeleine lifted her chin defiantly. "Fine. Let's just say my charity was misplaced, and I raised a viper."
"You still feel zero remorse," Winifred said fiercely. "That's fine. It's better that you're out. I'll be waiting to watch you, Arthur Seward, and Iris Morgan burn."
"What did you just say?" Madeleine stumbled, almost collapsing.
She seemed genuinely shocked that Winifred had tracked down Arthur.
But she quickly composed herself.
"You're spouting psychotic nonsense!"
Iris was standing right there, completely unharmed. That was proof enough.
If Winifred actually had evidence, she would have gone to the police by now.
And if she had acted, the cowardly Iris would be in full panic mode, not standing here looking perfectly serene.
Winifred said coldly, "I came to wait for you today specifically to tell you something. Arthur's daughter-in-law just had her second child. The day after her C-section, she was dragged out of the hospital, and now the whole family is on the run, hiding like rats. Just like Iris—suspended from work, hiding in the house, too terrified to show her face in public."
