Madeleine studied Iris's face. When she played the obedient, sweet card, she was incredibly charming. The kind of girl anyone would want to protect. Madeleine reached out, patted Iris's wavy hair, and returned a polite smile.

Iris rested her chin on Madeleine's shoulder.

"Could I borrow some money?"

Before Madeleine could process the request, Iris launched into her sob story. "Holden bought the pharmaceutical company for me to restructure into Iris-Adams Biopharma. The initial investment is projected at ten billion. My parents are putting up five, which means I need to match it. But I've only made a fraction of that over the last three years. I'm still way short."

She conveniently failed to mention that the reason she had been forced to stop working and pay massive breach-of-contract fees was entirely Madeleine's fault. By her logic, Madeleine owed her.

Iris figured her soon-to-be ex-mother-in-law had an impressive secret stash. A woman as calculating as her, married for thirty-seven years, had to have built up a massive personal treasury.

He immediately went into problem-solving mode. "My funds are tightly monitored by my dad right now, so I can't move large amounts. But Kian and Preston would be more than happy to help. I've spoken to them. Loaning you a billion wouldn't be an issue."

Iris's eyes lit up.

Why hadn't she thought of that? If she didn't have the cash, she could just borrow it.

Kian Jennings and Preston York adored her. Those two would walk through fire for her. All she had to do was ask, and they'd probably hand over blank checks and beg her to use them.

Holden then shifted the topic to her family.

"Have Owen and Yvonne gotten back from their honeymoon yet?"

"Since your brother just got back, we should step up," Holden suggested. "He joined the Sutton family, and as his closest relatives, we need to give him a leg up. Talk to him about the funding gap. Offer him an investment opportunity so he can build a real career. Otherwise, the Suttons are going to start treating him like a freeloader."

Iris's thoughts snapped back to the present. He was right.

For years, Owen had ruined every business venture he touched. He built a hotel that got hit by an earthquake right after completion. He opened a golf club that had more golf balls on the grass than actual members. He invested in finance and got sued for illegal fundraising.
