A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 265

Devastating.

When Leland had first arrived, she was a prisoner. He had crossed mountains and rivers, stepping into the darkness solely to pull her out.

But by the time they left, they were little more than strangers.

From eyes filled only with her, to a face masked in frost—it had taken a mere six days.

The car sped down the airport highway, tearing through the biting wind that howled against the windows. Even through the glass, the icy chill of winter was palpable, but the atmosphere inside the car was even colder.

They sat shoulder to shoulder in the backseat, separated only by her purse and his suit jacket.

First class on the flight to Kingsbridge had been packed. A few people had recognized Leland and greeted him, glancing curiously at the woman beside him. He had only offered polite smiles, refusing to introduce her.

The driver, familiar with Winifred, kept trying to make polite conversation, but Leland gave him absolutely nothing to work with.

The car headed toward home. The dead of winter had set in, the sky hanging low over the city like a heavy, suffocating iron lid.

The silence in the car was suffocating.

It was truly over.

It felt like waking from a fever dream. The tires devoured the miles, rushing to deposit them back into the separate lives they belonged to.

Winifred steadied herself, pulling her thoughts back to reality. It was time to focus on what mattered.

Seth and Annie would be waking up from their naps right about now. She wondered what the little ones were up to.

Yesterday, Celeste had texted her: *Took the babies on the subway to the farmers' market on the outskirts. Brought home two ducklings, two white goslings, and a little brown mutt.*

*"Yes, Mrs. Lockwood?"* beside her, Leland answered a call from his grandmother.

He listened for a moment.

*"I don't have time."*

Sylvia spoke again.

Winifred felt his gaze slide toward her. She turned her head, briefly meeting his eyes.

He spoke into the phone. *"Do whatever you want. If you want to see her, just see her. You don't need to inform me."*

The eye contact lasted only a fraction of a second before Winifred looked back out the window.

Leland continued his call.

The car finally pulled into the estate. Winifred grabbed her bag, ready to bolt.
