Sitting comfortably on Leland's arm, Seth looked at him seriously. "You kept your promise and brought my mom back safely. Thank you!"
Leland pinched the boy's cheek. "Then go claim your reward. It's time I kept my second promise."
Leland turned his attention toward Winifred.
"Annie, I brought a lot of things back. I hope you find something you like."
Annie, still resting her chin on Winifred's shoulder, mumbled, "If Mommy likes it, I like it."
Winifred saw a genuine, familiar smile cross Leland's face for the first time in days.
"Well then, Winifred, you better be on your best behavior. Try to like everything so your daughter can get more presents."
"Thank you," Winifred said quietly.
Leland lowered his eyes and walked ahead, carrying Seth.
Winifred followed with Annie. They walked through the gates, past the playground equipment, and into the living room.
Fletcher, wearing an apron, practically sprinted out of the kitchen to greet them.
"You're back! This is wonderful!"
"You've done a great job," Leland noted approvingly. "Look at these two. You've kept them happy and well-fed."
Annie peeked her head up to look around.
Leland took the opportunity to gently take her from Winifred. "Come here. Let's look at your presents."
"Mommy?" Annie looked back, waiting for permission.
"Go ahead," Winifred said softly, handing her over.
Leland took both kids, crouching down to their level as the bodyguard popped open a massive suitcase.
"Whoa!"
Annie's eyes went wide at the dazzling array of local candies and snacks.
"Do you like it?" Leland chuckled.
"Yes!"
"Then let's try some."
"Mommy?" Annie checked again. She usually wasn't allowed much sugar; Winifred always said it ruined her appetite and caused cavities.
"Go ahead," Winifred smiled warmly. "Just brush your teeth after."
