But Winifred kept those thoughts to herself.
Quinn had always been the kind of woman who craved stability; for her, a solid relationship was the ultimate safe harbor. Her childhood had been shattered by her parents’ divorce and her biological father's brutal domestic violence. Her mother had once been beaten so badly she fell into a three-day coma. When she finally woke up, she filed for divorce, enduring over two years of agonizing legal battles before she was finally free.
During the custody dispute, her paternal grandparents had fought viciously. In the end, her mother was forced to leave her older sister, Carys, behind, only managing to take the younger Quinn.
When her mother remarried, her new husband was a decent, hardworking man who handed over his entire paycheck to support them. With a stable income, her mother bought new clothes, school supplies, and treats, taking long train rides across the country just to visit Carys.
But her father’s family had been merciless. They would throw dirty dishwater out the door, screaming that her mother was a cheating tramp who had abandoned her family. They blocked her from seeing Carys and poisoned the young girl’s mind. By the time Carys was seven, she had been thoroughly brainwashed into hating her own mother.
Raised in a toxic environment fueled by hatred, an absent father, and vicious grandparents, Carys grew up like a wild, untamed weed. She was stunning and brilliant, eventually getting accepted into the prestigious Kingsbridge Film Academy. But her twisted upbringing left her volatile, accustomed to handling conflicts with extreme aggression. Tragically, it all culminated in her taking her own life while six months pregnant.
Quinn hadn’t even found out about her sister’s death until years later.
Her mother, suffering from severe seizures due to the traumatic brain injury inflicted by her ex-husband, had eventually passed away. On her deathbed, her only regret was Carys.
Desperate to fulfill her mother’s dying wish, Quinn had gone searching for her sister. She traveled back to her biological father’s hometown, only to discover the devastating truth about Carys and her fatal entanglement with Declan Sutton. Her father’s family hadn’t even let her through the front door. Her grandparents had cursed her out, calling her just as worthless as her mother. Her father’s new, young wife had unclipped a massive guard dog that tackled Quinn to the ground, tearing a chunk of flesh from her leg.
And now, Quinn had lost both her mother and her sister.
Her biological father had pocketed the millions Declan had paid in a wrongful death settlement and married a twenty-one-year-old. Her grandparents wanted nothing to do with her. Her only living family was her aging adoptive father, who lived halfway across the country.
All of Quinn’s fragile vulnerability was laid bare before Winifred.
All Winifred could do was offer her blessing.
She pulled her friend into a tight embrace. "I’m so happy for you. I hope you build a beautiful life together."
The front door swung open.
Winifred chuckled. "You bought those onesies for them, remember?"
"I sure did." Quinn beamed, her smile stretching from ear to ear as she kissed Annelise’s soft, flawless cheek. "My proudest purchase."
She had spotted the fuzzy outfits in a boutique a year ago and couldn't resist. When she first brought them over, the twins had been so tiny they looked like they were drowning in fabric, with Annelise kicking and crying inside the oversized hood.
Stepping further into the house, Quinn’s eyes widened.
"Whoa. This is a literal mansion! Winifred, you are amazing."
Seth grabbed a pair of slippers for his mother, then bent down, digging into the shoe cabinet to find a pair for Quinn. Winifred gently placed her hand on the top edge of the cabinet to keep him from bumping his head.
She offered a modest smile. "I worked myself to the bone for two years. I guess it finally paid off."
