Winifred returned home to find Celeste and Fletcher playing cards. Once again, Celeste's lack of strategy had resulted in her losing spectacularly; her face was covered in so many strips of white penalty paper that she couldn't even see, though she was still cackling away.
"Finally, you're back!" Fletcher said, clutching his cards. He paused, eyeing the bouquet. "Who got you the roses, Dr. Shultz?"
"A business associate," Winifred said with a laugh, kicking off her shoes.
Fletcher let out a breath. "I just got off the phone with the house staff. Mr. Lockwood is sick."
"Oh."
"He has a really high fever."
"Mhm."
"A hundred and three degrees. It's bad."
When she offered no further reaction, Fletcher grew anxious. "Aren't you going to do something?"
Winifred didn't look up as she swapped her shoes for slippers. "What exactly do you want me to do?"
"Go see him! Treat him!"
"Fletcher, the Lockwoods have an entire hospital at their disposal."
Fletcher hesitated. Winifred headed for the stairs.
Fletcher turned around. "Then... should I go back and check on him?"
"Go ahead," Winifred said, resting her hand on the banister. "Drive safe."
Upstairs, Quinn's room was buzzing with activity. Seth was sitting on a small chair by the bed, playing an audiobook of classic mythology for Quinn. At his feet, Star the dog sat at attention, looking utterly adorable.
Next to the dog, Annelise was kneeling on the rug, snipping colorful paper with safety scissors.
"What are you making, baby?" Winifred asked.
"Mommy's home!" Annelise jumped up and hugged Winifred's leg, beaming. "I'm making petals! I want Star's bed to smell pretty."
Winifred crouched down and handed the roses to her daughter. "Use these. Real petals."
"Wow! Who gave Mommy flowers? They're so pretty."
"A business associate."
Winifred shook her head. "I need Quentin to drag Iris and Holden down with him. I want all three of them in hell."
Changing the subject, Winifred asked, "Have you thought about what Declan said about quitting your job?"
With Declan's wealth and status, Quinn really didn't need her grueling hospital job anymore.
Quinn looked conflicted. "I just can't sit around doing nothing. It feels like I'm wasting my life."
"Then come work with me," Winifred offered. "My new studio is ready. Let's run it together."
While they talked, Fletcher was speeding back toward the Lockwood Mansion.
Little did Winifred know, she would also be summoned to the Lockwood estate the very next morning.
The following morning was blanketed in a thick, freezing fog. By nine o'clock, the sky outside was still a gloomy gray.
In Holden's study, Iris adjusted her white fur shawl. "It's freezing today. Barely thirty-seven degrees."
Holden looked up from his monitor, his gaze softening. "Bundle up. You get cold easily."
