Yvette let go of Iris, her face stormy.
"Let's get some air." Iris pointed to a side door near the restrooms that led out to the gardens.
With her ego bruised and her mood ruined, Yvette stormed outside.
Two of Nelly's maids were standing in the garden, waiting while their employers ate inside.
"You really shouldn't badmouth Dr. Shultz," one maid was saying. "She's so kind and gentle. She treated my back pain for free."
The other maid scoffed. "She's a vicious manipulator! Look at what she did to Iris. Mrs. Sutton fired her for a reason. I don't understand why you're defending her."
"You—"
"What about me?"
"What are you arguing about?" Iris snapped, startling the two women.
They immediately stepped aside, apologizing.
As they moved, Yvette caught sight of a familiar figure. A few yards away, Winifred was deep in conversation with a man wearing a bright orange waterproof apron, looking very much like a pool cleaner.
"Her? What is she doing here?" Yvette's eyes narrowed dangerously.
Panic seized Iris. She shoved the maids away and lunged at Yvette, desperately trying to hold her back.
Her mind scrambled for an excuse. "Winifred... she... she's unemployed now! No hospital will hire her. She probably couldn't afford to eat, so she came here begging for a job as a cleaner..."
It certainly looked that way. Winifred was talking earnestly to the maintenance worker.
Yvette's face twisted with pure malice. "I will not let her scavenge for scraps in my presence!"
