Shannon couldn't hold it in any longer and let out a delighted laugh. "Son, you are hopelessly whipped."
The women around the table, who had been desperately holding back, finally erupted into a chorus of laughter that seemed to shake the ceiling.
Sylvia was laughing so hard she had to wave her hands. "It's genetics! Don't tease him too much."
"Right, right, nobody laugh! Let's be serious..."
Which, of course, only triggered another wave of boisterous laughter.
Winifred felt the infectious joy of the family and found herself genuinely smiling.
Then, a shrill, venomous voice cut through the joy like a knife.
"How touching! A divorced mother of two being treated like royalty by the wealthiest family in town!"
Iris?
Winifred's heart dropped, and she whipped her head around.
The entire room went dead silent as everyone turned to look at the source of the malicious outburst.
Winifred braced herself. Let Iris say whatever she wanted. She didn't care anymore! If the Lockwoods decided they couldn't accept her past, she would understand. In a way, she would be grateful to know now, before she allowed herself to sink any deeper into their warmth only to have it ripped away.
"Iris, what on earth is going on with you today?" Shannon stepped forward, her tone polite but firm, maintaining the grace expected of her status.
Iris pointed a sharp finger directly at Winifred. "I am here to expose her!"
Leland shot out of his chair instantly, his voice a sharp crack of thunder. "Iris Morgan, I'm warning you. Watch your mouth!"
They didn't believe her? They were actually defending Winifred?
If the Lockwoods accepted Winifred, she would officially become the wife of the heir to the most powerful family in the country. Her social standing would eclipse Iris's entirely. Her in-laws would be untouchable. Her husband would be leagues above Holden...
No!
Absolutely not!
This was the exact opposite of what she and Holden wanted. They had spent so much energy trying to ruin Winifred, trying to force her into a miserable, pathetic existence. She was supposed to be destitute and alone, not ascending to the top of high society!
Driven to madness by jealousy, Iris decided to drop the ultimate bomb. Holden had told her to win this round first and deal with the fallout later.
So, she raised her voice for everyone to hear. "I am telling the truth! Winifred was married to Holden Lockwood! She divorced Holden Lockwood! And she gave birth to his two kids!"
