The Lockwood family picked a beautiful, clear day for the formal homecoming banquet to officially welcome the kids into the family.
Early that morning, Winifred had the kids lined up for inspection.
She adjusted the collar of Seth's little black bomber jacket and smoothed out his scarf.
"You look so handsome, buddy."
Next, she moved on to Annelise, who gave her a sweet, dimpled smile as she approached.
"Aren't you just perfect? Whose gorgeous little girl are you?"
"Mommy's little girl!"
Winifred smiled and gently smoothed her daughter's hair.
Today, Annelise was wearing a custom pink diamond tiara that Leland had ordered a month in advance. Her hair was styled into a neat little bun at the crown with the tiara nestled perfectly in front, while the rest of her curls tumbled down her back over the collar of her dress.
She wore a beautiful pale yellow princess dress. The bodice was soft velvet with a ruffled collar and delicate pearl-embroidered flowers across the chest. The skirt flared out in three layers of soft, pleated tulle. She had on warm leggings and little round-toe patent leather shoes with butterfly accents that fluttered when she walked.
Winifred cupped her daughter's soft cheeks.
"When we see everyone today, be brave, okay? Don't be shy."
Annelise nodded eagerly. "I'll say hello to Mr. Warren and Ms. Shannon, and everyone else in the family!"
She mentally reviewed all the names they had practiced.
Satisfied, Winifred moved on to the last person in line.
She adjusted the fur collar on Celeste's black down coat.
"How do I look?" Celeste asked nervously. "Are you sure taking me to a billionaire's mansion isn't going to embarrass you?"
Winifred pulled her into a hug. "Don't ever say that. You are family."
"I promise to keep my mouth shut and not cause any trouble, Winifred. I swear."
Annelise grabbed Celeste's hand and looked up with a bright smile. "Celeste, Mommy said Daddy's family is having a huge feast today! You don't have to talk, you can just use your mouth to eat all the yummy food!"
"Exactly! I will keep my mouth shut and just eat!" Celeste agreed wholeheartedly.
Leaving the kids with Celeste, Winifred headed back to her room to finish getting ready.
When she finally stepped out, Leland had already arrived and was waiting for her in the living room.
Even from a distance, the heat in his gaze made her cheeks flush.
