Holden gently pulled Jordyn's hand away. "Dad has a very important dinner to get back to. I don't have time to waste here."

Jordyn burst into theatrical, wailing tears.

Holden's heart instantly ached. He hugged her tightly, patting her back to coax her. "Don't cry, don't cry. Dad was wrong. I'm sorry."

"If you want the twins to apologize, then we'll wait for them to apologize."

"Didn't Annie just call her dad? When he gets here, I'll have a word with him about how he's raising his kids."

Jordyn lifted her head, pouting fiercely. "If Annie has a dad, I want him to apologize to me too!"

"Of course. It's a father's fault if a child acts out. They hurt you, so their father should naturally take responsibility."

"Exactly!" Jordyn scrubbed the tears from her face with the back of her hand, looking at Annie with a smug, triumphant smirk.

"Annie, if your dad actually shows up, my dad will teach both of you a lesson!"

Her round face flushed with excitement, but it wasn't enough.

"I want your mom to apologize, too! Your whole family has to say sorry to me! The teacher said bad kids have bad parents. I bet your parents are terrible!"

Just as the words left her mouth, a tall silhouette strode out of the ballroom doors.

His footsteps were heavy and commanding.

Annie turned her head. The moment she saw Leland's face, she reached her little arms up high, waiting for him.

Leland scooped her up effortlessly. "What's wrong, sweetheart?"

Annie pointed at Holden and Jordyn. "That's Jordyn and her uncle. Her uncle is also her dad now. His name is Holden Lockwood, and he's a really bad man. He wants to hit me and Seth."

Holden, now the center of attention, stared at Leland in absolute, frozen shock.

He stood there, cold and utterly bewildered.
