As Holden's words hung in the air, Iris whipped around, her face twisting in rage.
"Why the hell are you calling her?!" she demanded.
"I need help," Holden rasped, the words sounding as though he had ground them out between his teeth.
Iris didn't care. She pointed a furious finger. "I forbid you from having anything to do with her!"
Holden stopped his chest compressions, looked up, and glared at her.
"Shut up!"
Iris stood there, completely dumbfounded.
He yelled at her?
He had actually yelled at her!
When had he ever treated her like this?
Tears instantly spilled over her lashes. Unable to direct her anger at him, she screamed at Winifred, "Get the hell away from here!"
The bystanders who hadn't been chased off by the fan earlier were completely outraged. They immediately started shouting her down.
"What is wrong with you? A doctor is here and you won't let her help?!"
"You really are a piece of work. It's terrifying that someone as toxic and unstable as you was ever allowed on television."
"If this guy dies, his blood is on your hands!"
Unable to withstand the fierce public backlash, Iris looked back at Holden.
Fine, she would tolerate this for now. She would give him one chance.
If he coaxed her properly later, she might consider forgiving him for snapping at her. When they got home, she'd make him grovel.
But Holden wasn't even looking at her. His eyes were entirely focused on Winifred.
"Dr. Shultz, please come here," he said again.
Iris completely broke down. She turned and sprinted away in tears.
Jordyn chased after her on her short little legs. "Aunt Iris! Don't be mad... Aunt Iris, wait for me!"
Winifred stepped forward, ignoring the drama.
"Step aside. Let me take a look at him," she said, her voice incredibly calm and gentle.
Her tone carried a quiet authority that instantly put everyone at ease.
