The dog was freezing and starving.
And so was he.
His voice came out hoarse: [Leland, I wanted to ask... where did you buy your daughter's little pink crown?]
Leland scoffed: [Are you trying to copy my style for your kid?]
[Don't laugh. This is strictly my own idea.]
Leland replied: [My daughter's is custom-made. It's the only one in the world.]
[Alright. Thanks.]
Holden hung up the phone.
He walked back and settled for the white diamond crown.
After paying, he remembered how Jordyn always stared longingly at Annie's pretty dresses.
Because Jordyn was chubby, Iris always dressed her in loose-fitting tracksuits instead of fitted, elegant princess gowns.
Carrying the dog.
Holden wandered the mall while trying to recall the exact pale yellow princess dress Annie had worn earlier that day...
Once he had the image clear in his head, he sketched it out on his phone.
He showed it to a clerk at a children's clothing boutique.
The clerk, representing a sporty kids' brand, pointed him to the next store over. "You should check them out. They specialize in cute styles and might have it."
"Thank you." He walked over and showed his sketch to the store manager.
The manager shook her head. "That's a formal, gown-style princess dress. We don't carry those."
Holden asked earnestly, "Do you know where I might find one?"
The manager pointed upward. "Try the upper floors."
...
By the time he finally managed to buy the exact same princess dress, the throbbing lump on his forehead felt like it had multiplied, threatening to split his skull open from the pressure.
He was dizzy and completely exhausted.
The moment he stepped outside, his foot missed the landing. He flew straight off the top step.
Just as he felt a rush of relief for not face-planting and ruining his suit.
He realized with horror that he had landed in an excruciatingly wide split, suspended mid-air, entirely unable to pull his legs back together.
"Help me up."
Miles Bauer, who had been quietly trailing him all evening out of concern for his mood, sprinted over, grabbed him by the waist, and hauled him upright.
"Ah..." Holden groaned in agony, clutching his groin.
With a massive bump on his forehead, his legs forced awkwardly apart, and his groin aching terribly, he walked into the pediatric surgery observation ward with an agonizingly stiff, wide-legged waddle.
"Uncle Holden! You're here!" Jordyn tried to slide off her mother's lap.
