"For three years, I lived like a machine. Running day and night, plotting every single day."
He tipped his head back, his fingers hastily wiping the tears spilling from his eyes.
"After going through hell, I finally found you. And what happened? The second we reunited, you shattered me all over again. My heart was completely turned upside down, and you just looked at me with pure ice. You didn't even want to see me."
"You hid from me for three years on purpose."
"Standing there in the blazing sun, I just wanted an explanation."
"But when I pulled off your mask and saw your face, you looked me in the eye and said you didn't know me!"
"I fought for three years, only to find out you stopped loving me."
"I still didn't give up. I tried every single day since we met again, but you just called me trash."
He was growing more and more unhinged.
He reached out and grabbed her chin.
*Ha!*
His mocking laughter echoed sharply in the room.
"You don't care about me anymore. You won't waste a single second thinking about me. You can't see the fake smiles I force every day, you can't see how hard I tried to protect you."
"You let your hatred for me convince you I'm scum."
"It wasn't until today that I finally figured it out. The reason I don't exist to you anymore is because the second you moved north, you hooked up with Leland Lockwood!"
"I ran myself ragged like an absolute idiot for three years, only to find out you and Leland already have a two-year-old kid!"
*Damn it...*
*Fuck!*
Holden let go of her chin and stumbled back, slamming into the opposite wall. One hand braced against the plaster, the other clutched his chest. He hunched over so far his head nearly touched the floor.
*Cough. Cough. Cough.*
A burning heat surged through his stomach. Having vomited blood before, he recognized the sensation—he was so enraged he was about to throw up blood again.
He was in blinding pain.
He felt like his entire body was shattering into tiny pieces.
The total collapse of his sanity was happening right in front of her.
Then, Winifred’s voice cut through the air above him, sharp and cold as an ice pick.
"Get out. Don't die in my lab."
