The underground parking garage was dimly lit, the old fluorescent bulbs coated in layers of dust.
Through the gloomy light, Winifred spotted Quentin's car.
Two little girls had their heads out the window, looking around before jumping out.
"Aunt Winifred... I missed you so much!" Demi Jordan cried out, throwing her little arms open as she sprinted over.
In the blink of an eye, the little girl had locked her arms tightly around Winifred's thigh.
"Aunt Winifred~"
"Hey," Winifred said with a polite smile.
Demi looked up at her, eyes sparkling with expectation.
According to their usual routine, this was the part where Winifred would affectionately pat her head, lovingly lecture her about something minor, pick her up, pinch her cheeks, and ask what she wanted for dinner.
But...
The bright smile on Demi’s face slowly faded.
It had been a while since they saw each other, and it seemed her aunt had forgotten their dynamic. She was getting zero reaction.
Demi decided she needed to nudge her aunt a little.
She needed to vocalize her grievances and get some sympathy.
"Aunt Winifred, since you've been gone, I lost weight! I'm starving. Grandma just gives us leftover rice and eggs for breakfast, and at night we eat whatever scrap vegetables are left tossed into a stew."
She couldn't live her normal life anymore.
When Winifred was home, they had a different, gourmet breakfast every day of the week, and the hired chef cooked six dishes and a soup for dinner.
Lately, she felt like a pig eating slop.
She stared at Winifred with big, pitiful eyes.
"Oh," Winifred replied flatly, staring right back.
Demi had just explained how miserable she was, and that was it?
Just "Oh"?
What was going on?
Demi pursed her dry lips, giving them a quick lick.
Since Winifred left, no one had bought their premium winter lip balm or moisturizers.
