The car drove steadily through the snowstorm. Snowflakes hammered against the windows, and the wipers squeaked rhythmically.
Demi's head drooped. "Uncle Quentin, can you please hire the housekeeper back?"
Eating the slop her grandma cooked every day was practically ruining her life.
"No," Quentin replied from the driver's seat, his tone absolute.
But the two sisters couldn't stand the current situation and immediately talked back.
"Mom came to see me yesterday and said I'm as skinny as a twig. Without someone making decent food, I'm never going to grow."
"There are six people in our family—old people, kids, and a pregnant woman. Nobody is taking care of us."
"Uncle Quentin, if nothing else works, why don't you make Grandma a set menu? Like: Monday breakfast is Greek yogurt with fresh berries, avocado toast with crispy bacon, and a sunny-side-up egg. Dinner is roasted garlic herb chicken, seared scallops, creamy truffle pasta, and a rich butternut squash soup. Tuesday's menu should avoid Monday's so we have something new."
"Yeah, write it down for Grandma to follow, so she doesn't just cook a giant pot of rice for dinner and then fry or boil the leftovers for breakfast, making it taste like cardboard."
"Once the house is sorted out, hire a tutor for us, so we actually have someone to help with our homework."
Larissa rested her chin on her hands and thought for a moment. "You could even pay the tutor a little extra to monitor the school emails. When there are fees to pay, she can notify you in time, so you don't miss it and the teacher doesn't have to single you out."
If they couldn't get Winifred back, spending some money to hire people could also solve their problems.
Two pairs of eyes stared intently at the back of Quentin's head.
Children simply didn't understand the heavy burdens of a breadwinner. Quentin sighed deeply.
Demi pressed him, "Are you still sad that Winifred didn't come home with us?"
Larissa chimed in, "Look on the bright side, Uncle Quentin. You have Shelly. If Winifred doesn't come home, Shelly will keep you company, so you won't be lonely."
Demi nodded. "Yeah, even though Shelly isn't nice to us, she loves you so much and is having your baby..."
"Shut up!" Quentin slammed his hands against the steering wheel.
