Unable to put her complicated feelings into words, Winifred simply nodded.

Worried about her driving with an injured ankle, Shannon called for the family's private chauffeur. Just as Winifred and the kids were about to get in the car, Fabiola came running out.

She forcefully shoved all the expensive gifts Winifred had brought right into the backseat. "Take your things back. I don't want them."

Shannon couldn't hold back anymore. "Fabiola, you can't behave like this."

Fabiola glared at her mother-in-law through teary eyes. "You're so biased!" With that strange, mocking shriek, she turned and ran back inside.

Winifred forced a polite smile. "Say goodbye to Sylvia, Shannon, and everyone else. We're going home now."

Annie waved her little hand. "Bye, Sylvia. Bye, Shannon. Bye, ladies..."

Seth gave a polite bow. "Goodbye."

The car pulled away from the sprawling Lockwood Mansion, merging onto King's Parkway.

"Could you drop us off at The Apex Grand, please?" Winifred asked the driver. Since Fabiola had rudely returned the gifts, Winifred had no intention of keeping them. She would return them to the mall before heading home.

The Apex Grand was Kingsbridge's premier shopping destination, housing global luxury brands. The fine jewelry counters were on the first floor.

While Winifred handled the returns with the sales associate, the twins huddled quietly near the counter. Spooked by Fabiola's earlier screaming, Seth stood rigidly with a deep frown, while Annie clung tightly to his hand, too afraid to move. Both siblings eyed passing shoppers with intense wariness.

When Winifred finished and saw them looking so guarded, her heart ached. "How about Mommy takes you upstairs to play for a bit?"
