Just her luck.
Winifred stood up barefoot, grabbing her purse in one hand and her boot in the other, ready to give the trashy couple a wide berth.
But Iris looped her arm through Holden's and tilted her head with a mocking smile. "Winifred? What are you doing here?"
Winifred ignored her and kept walking, limping slightly.
Iris's laughter grew louder. "Did you come all the way here just to stalk us?"
Winifred kept moving.
"Aww, thank you!" Iris taunted. "That's so sweet of you. Dragging your injured foot all the way here just to witness our happiness... We should really take a picture together!"
Holden immediately chimed in, his tone dripping with condescension. "Winifred, since you're already here, your intentions are obvious. There's no need to hide when you see me; it just looks pathetic. Iris is being generous enough to invite you. Come take a photo with us. That way, whenever you miss us, you can just look at the picture instead of desperately staging these 'accidental' encounters."
Winifred stopped and turned around, her eyes blazing with fury.
Holden raised an eyebrow. "Come on. Join us. Hmm?"
She had reached her breaking point. Just as she opened her mouth to tear into them, a wealthy older woman with a mess of tightly permed hair waved excitedly at her.
"Winifred? Winifred... Oh my gosh! Am I dreaming? I can't believe I'm running into you today!"
"It's been years!"
"I honestly thought you were dead!"
In the blink of an eye, the woman bustled over, grabbed Winifred's hand, and held it tightly, practically vibrating with excitement.
"Where have you been all these years? I asked Madeleine about you so many times, but she always said she didn't know."
