Even after the dreadful group finally left the play area and headed back into the bridal boutique, a storm raged in Winifred's eyes.
Staring at Holden's retreating back, she felt a hatred so deep it seeped into her very bones. She wanted to slice that scumbag into pieces. First hack him up, then burn him to ash, and finally scatter him to the wind, obliterating his existence for all eternity. She had never imagined she could hate someone enough to wish for their absolute annihilation.
She sat by the fence in a daze, time slipping away until over two hours had passed.
When the kids finally grew tired and thirsty, she limped over and led them away. They took the elevator up to the 26th floor, which housed the mall's expansive food court. Annie loved slurping soft rice noodles, and Seth preferred chewy knife-cut noodles.
She settled the twins in a cozy booth at a popular eatery and pulled out their water bottles. Leaving them to rest and hydrate, she went up to the counter to order.
After scanning her phone to pay, she turned around, her eyes still glued to the screen.
*Thud.*
Her forehead smacked into a solid wall of black fabric. Assuming she had bumped into the person in line behind her, she quickly stepped back. "I'm so sorry!"
But when she looked up, her blood ran cold. The shock wiped her mind completely blank, leaving her standing there, paralyzed and staring.
Holden smirked down at her. "Are you that terrified of me? Look at you, pale as a ghost, like your soul just left your body."
Winifred gritted her teeth. "You! Go to hell!"
"Is this... overwhelming anxiety? Or are you just taking your anger out on me?"
"You shameless bastard! The biggest regret of my life is ever loving a piece of trash like you. I absolutely despise you!" Winifred spat, tears welling in her eyes as she shoved past his shoulder.
His footsteps followed right behind her. "Regret loving me? How heartbreaking."
As she neared her children's booth, Winifred spun around to block him. "Stop following me!"
Holden stretched his neck to peer over at the twins. "After what Iris's mom said, I have to admit, I'm curious. I can't wait for you to take those twins for a paternity test."
He looked down. Standing right beside his leg was Seth. The tiny boy had his little fist raised high, his face dark with fury, his large, dark eyes glaring daggers.
"You shouldn't doubt her. I have the guts," Seth growled.
Holden's hand finally felt the source of the pain on his behind, and he froze. Sticking out of his flesh was... a knife.
"You little brat!" His eyes practically bulged out of his head. It was unbelievable. The kid was barely a toddler, yet he had the sheer viciousness of an assassin.
Winifred gasped in horror and scooped Seth up. "Sweetheart, where did you get a knife?!"
Seth pointed a tiny finger toward a passing food cart. A chef in a tall white hat was carving a massive roasted lamb leg, and the kid had snatched the steak knife right off the tray.
"Luckily, your pathetic baby strength wasn't enough to actually slice a chunk out of me." Holden yanked the knife out himself, clamping a hand over the freshly punctured hole in his pants. He glared at Seth. "You little psychopath. You're barely out of diapers and you're already pulling this?"
Seth raised his tiny fist, unblinking. "Today, I could only reach your butt on my tiptoes. I'm letting you off easy. Once I'm taller, I'll shove it straight into your kidneys."
