Eleanor stood at the bottom of the stairs, staring up at Quentin's closed bedroom door, her face wrinkled like a bitter melon. Beside her, Albert kept his head down, offering a convenient target for her mounting frustration.

"Just look at what she's doing," Eleanor hissed. "We tell her to come back, and she refuses! Now our whole family is struggling to survive."

Albert cleared his throat nervously. "We made a huge concession by agreeing to let her marry Quentin, and she doesn't even appreciate it. Let's have him call her later. If she hurries back today and gets the household finances in order, we'll let it slide. But if she refuses... well, even if she comes begging at our door with a pile of cash later, we won't take her back."

The bedroom door creaked open. The elderly couple instantly shrank back, retreating to the edge of the sofa.

"What are you two blanking out for so early in the morning?" Quentin asked, striding down the stairs.

"Money," Eleanor said bluntly.

Quentin's brow twitched. "Didn't I just give you three thousand?"

Eleanor immediately fired off a rapid-fire list. "Larissa and Demi's miscellaneous school fees are nine hundred and eighty. The HOA fees haven't been paid in three months, that's eighteen hundred and ten..."

Quentin tuned out the rest. They were acting like they were on the brink of starvation, making him feel like a criminal who was letting his family go hungry.

"I'll give it to you tonight," he muttered, yanking the front door open and practically sprinting outside.

"Aren't you going to eat breakfast?" Albert shouted through the closing door.

But he was already gone.

"Eating out is so expensive," Eleanor grumbled, her face darkening with anger. "It costs at least fifteen bucks for a single meal. Winifred cooked breakfast for three years and spoiled all our appetites! Now everyone is a picky eater and impossible to please. She caused our family to end up like this, and she needs to take responsibility!"
