Annelise remained unconscious, and Winifred knew exactly how dire the situation was. The attending specialist, Dr. Lewis, was renowned in pediatric internal medicine. He had personally agreed to perform the surgery, which gave Winifred a much-needed sense of relief.
But to her shock, when the time came to sign the consent forms just an hour before the operation, the surgeon's name had been changed.
"Why isn't it Dr. Lewis?" she asked, her voice tight with panic.
The young doctor handling the paperwork stammered, "Dr. Lewis... he had a sudden emergency and was reassigned."
This was open-heart surgery. It would dictate the rest of her little girl's life. A last-minute switch was entirely unacceptable.
Winifred rushed out of the office and nearly collided with Declan Sutton, who was walking down the hall. Declan didn't hesitate; he kicked the office door open and barged right back in.
"Who the hell swapped the surgeon? Where is Dr. Lewis? Where did he go?"
The young doctor hesitated, nervously shifting his weight. Finally, he spilled the truth: the Reality Show Goddess's mother had injured her leg a few days ago, and her condition had supposedly become critical that morning. The hospital had rushed a whole team of doctors over to attend to her.
"That's ridiculous!" Declan slammed his fist on the desk. "An old woman hurt her leg, and they pulled a top pediatric specialist? What's he going to do, treat her to death?"
He immediately dialed Holden Lockwood.
"You bastard! What the hell are you playing at?"
There was dead silence on the other end. Holden and Declan already had bad blood from a previous altercation at the Sutton estate. Knowing Declan had a tendency to be an irritating nuisance, Holden simply ignored him.
Instead, Iris Morgan's sickly-sweet voice filtered through the speaker. "Hubby, you're amazing. Thank you for getting the best pediatric experts in Kingsbridge to look at my mom's leg."
Holden chuckled softly. "You specifically asked for Dr. Lewis from cardiology, didn't you?"
"Thank you. You really are a man who grants my every wish."
"We're family. There's no need to be polite."
Iris pulling Dr. Lewis away was entirely Shelly Hale's doing. When Albert and Eleanor Adams were arrested for their crimes, Shelly had panicked and gone to Iris for help. Iris immediately seized the chance to sabotage the medical care for Winifred's children. Seth's hernia surgery had been a quick, minor procedure, finishing in just fifteen minutes—too fast for her to interfere. But Annelise's heart surgery required extensive pre-op prep, giving Iris the perfect opening. If she couldn't kill Winifred directly, driving her insane with grief was the next best thing.
