"Holy shit, is she dying?"

"If she dies, what's going to happen to her kids?" Declan panicked. "The new stepmom is moving in three days from now. Once she starts whispering in his ear, their real dad is going to turn into a wicked stepdad. Those kids are doomed!"

"Shut your mouth!" Quinn snapped, dropping to her knees and pinching the space above Winifred's upper lip to rouse her.

Winifred's eyes fluttered open. She reached for the wall, her trembling legs barely supporting her weight as she forced herself up.

Quinn was crying and laughing at the same time. "You scared me to death. I was so worried you wouldn't make it."

Winifred didn't answer. She locked her gaze on the doctor's office and stumbled toward it, her footsteps heavy and uneven.

An elderly woman carrying a red plastic basin walked toward her in the corridor. As they passed each other, Winifred lost her balance, her shoulder clipping the edge of the basin.

"Are you blind?" the old woman snapped, glaring. "You almost knocked over my things!"

"I'm sorry," Winifred whispered, her body swaying as she turned.

"If you're sick, go see a doctor! Bumping into an old lady like that—have you no shame?" the woman continued, spittle flying from her lips.

Quinn was furious. "She just bumped into you by accident! Is there any need to be so vicious?"

By the time Quinn finished arguing, Winifred had vanished.

She hurried to the assistant doctor's office, where Winifred was already in tears, pleading desperately.

"My daughter is my entire life. She can't afford a single mistake. Please, I'm begging you, stick to the original treatment plan. Let Dr. Lewis perform the surgery."

The assistant sighed in annoyance. "What's the point of telling me? I'm not the hospital director."

"The Morgan heiress's mother just injured her leg! She doesn't need a pediatric cardiologist," Winifred begged, tears streaming down her face. "She's just doing this to torment us. Please, look at the facts and do what's right."
