"Are you refusing to listen to me?"
Holden felt for the armrest of his wheelchair and patted it twice.
Miles grimaced but kept his mouth shut. He spun the wheelchair around so Holden was facing the wall, shielding him from the bustling corridor. Once he was safely tucked away, Miles jogged off to do his bidding.
Nine minutes later, Miles returned.
"What took you so long?" Holden demanded, his voice tight with anxiety.
"It wasn't long at all. Just a few minutes."
Holden refused to accept that. "It felt like centuries."
"That's because you're trapped in the dark. Time moves slower when you're suffering."
Miles looked at the thick bandages wrapping the upper half of Holden's once-handsome face. It was hard to stomach.
"Is she... doing okay?" Holden asked, his deep voice dipping into a bleak depression.
Miles let out an exasperated breath. "Look at you. You're like this, and you're still obsessing over a woman who has moved on. She's glowing. Her whole family is over the moon right now. Meanwhile, look at yourself—blind, losing weight, unshaven. You don't even look like the untouchable billionaire anymore."
"If she's doing well, that's all that matters," Holden muttered, his voice sinking even lower. But he craved details. "Can she see?"
"I got there right after the doctor finished rounds. Yes, she can see. She's recovering perfectly."
Holden's lips twitched. A faint, bittersweet smile surfaced. "What about her kids? Are they fully recovered? Especially the little girl... is she healthy?"
"The boy looks completely fine. He's standing guard right by his mom's bed. The little girl is practically glued to her dad. She wouldn't let go of his neck, and every few seconds, she'd tilt her head, look at his face, and call him 'Daddy'."
Miles chuckled, missing the tension radiating from the man in the chair. "It was actually adorable. She's so cute with her little baby voice. Honestly, it made me want to have a daughter and see what being a dad is like."
Holden's head slowly dropped until his chin nearly hit his chest.
Miles panicked and yanked him upright by his collar. "The doctor specifically said you can't put downward pressure on your eyes!"
"It sounds like... her family is very happy," Holden whispered.
