"Hahahaha! That's the best landing pad ever! Look, it even has hair for grass, so the bride and groom didn't fall out!"
It was Annelise's squealing laughter.
Footsteps quickly approached.
Holden sat frozen, utterly humiliated, wearing whatever the hell had just landed on him like a shameful crown.
He didn't dare reach up to grab it. If he pulled it down himself, he'd look like a pathetic victim being bullied. If he left it there, he looked like a glorified piece of furniture.
He swallowed hard. "What is on my head?"
"A... a little flower basket, sir," the bodyguard said, his face burning with outrage.
Holden's Adam's apple bobbed. "Be specific. I want details."
The bodyguard leaned in to inspect it. "It's a basket decorated with white roses. Inside is a miniature bench. There's a little couple sitting on the bench staring romantically at each other. The bride has a veil and a flower crown. The groom is in a black tux. Oh, and buried in the flowers... is a massive diamond ring."
The bodyguard intentionally left the basket where it was. He was keeping the 'evidence' intact so he could properly berate whoever had just disrespected his boss.
"Did you do this?!" the bodyguard barked at the approaching group.
Seth was standing next to Annelise. Behind Seth was a bodyguard, and sprinting up right behind him was Fletcher.
"Oh, wow. If it isn't Mr. Lockwood of the Seaport branch."
Holden had never formally met Fletcher and didn't recognize the voice. "How are you going to fix this?" he asked, his tone lethal.
"My apologies, totally my fault!" Fletcher smoothly snatched the remote from Seth's hands. He tapped a few buttons, and the drone, which was hovering near the ceiling, stabilized.
The flower basket gracefully lifted off Holden's head and immediately U-turned back into Room 008.
"My boss is proposing to Dr. Shultz today, and we let Seth here handle the ring delivery. The kid got a little trigger-happy with the joystick and accidentally offended you. My bad," Fletcher said, casually nudging Seth forward. "Come on, apologize to the man."
Seth scoffed. "He doesn't deserve one."
With that, the boy spun on his heel and walked back into the room.
"You—" The bodyguard was shaking with rage. "He did that on purpose!"
From refusing to lend the umbrella to blocking the elevator, the kid had made his intentions perfectly clear. He was intentionally torturing a blind man!
"Then tell Winifred to come out," Holden said, his voice echoing eerily down the hall.
Winifred? Apologize to him?
Fletcher blinked slowly. "Dr. Shultz is recovering from brain surgery."
"What about your boss, then?" the bodyguard demanded. "He can come out and answer for this."
"I'm right here."
Leland's voice floated out from the doorway. He leaned against the frame, a sharp grin on his face.
"Well, well. It really is a small world, isn't it, Holden? I get it, you're having a bad day, and I'm happy to give you an apology. But you're going to have to wait out here until I finish locking down my fiancée. The timing is just too perfect right now."
Leland glanced at Fletcher. "Go bring Winifred out here."
Fletcher looked concerned. "Boss, she's still really weak."
"Tell her it's not every day we get a front-row audience like Holden Lockwood. Tell her we've got the perfect witness, and to please power through it for just a few minutes."
