A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 54

She froze. There was a pair of eyes in the mirror. She looked closer, and those eyes met hers perfectly. Their gazes locked. It felt like a bolt of electricity struck her, sending a jolt through her body. She instinctively shrank back. The hand holding the spoon trembled. In a panic, she jammed it into the yogurt container, poking a dozen holes into it until the beautifully smooth yogurt was mashed into a sloppy mess. She sneaked another peek at the rearview mirror. Those eyes were still there, crinkling with amusement and overflowing with warmth.

Then she heard his deep, resonant voice ask, "Is it good?"

Playing along, she scooped up a spoonful of the mashed yogurt and put it in her mouth. She swallowed it in one gulp. "It's delicious. Thank you, Mr. Lockwood."

The eyes in the rearview mirror stayed fixed on her. "Call me Leland from now on. You're always so formal; it makes us seem like strangers."

He was two years older than her, so calling him by his first name wasn't entirely out of the question. But still. Look at his status, and then look at hers. They were not on the same level. Keeping her distance was safer for both of them.

Fortunately, they soon arrived at the Lockwood Mansion. Winifred didn't engage in deep conversation, nor did she act overly distant. The entire family of the east wing lived together, and though the sun hadn't fully set, the massive estate was already brightly lit inside and out.

As soon as Winifred walked through the door, Shannon Upton rushed up to greet her. "Dr. Shultz, please come look at my grandson! He's only three months old and he's had a fever for three days! The medication isn't working, and he threw up this afternoon. We took him to the hospital, and they told us to prep him for a spinal tap tomorrow! Oh, my god... a three-month-old baby getting..."

Shannon, usually the picture of poised elegance, grabbed Winifred's hand and burst into tears.

"Don't worry, Mrs. Lockwood. Let me examine the baby right now."

Winifred gave Shannon a reassuring hug and held her hand as they walked over together. Wyatt Lockwood was pacing the floor, holding the baby. The baby's mother, Fabiola, had eyes swollen from crying. "He's so uncomfortable and fussy. He only wants his dad to hold him."

"If you permit it, I can use a gentle acupuncture technique to release the built-up heat. Once the fever breaks, I'll apply a specialized holistic herbal patch to sustain the temperature drop, and the immediate crisis will be resolved. Once he recovers, we can slowly adjust his diet. It's not a major issue."

"We agree, of course! Please, start right away," Shannon immediately ordered the nannies to prep the area.

Sylvia's tone was firm. "A tiny prick from a needle is nothing. No harsh medication, no injections—the impact on his little body will be negligible."

Wyatt and his wife nodded in agreement. The younger generation hadn't experienced holistic remedies before, so they were waiting to see the results. However, in the Lockwood family, the younger members respected their elders. Since both the grandmother and mother, who had plenty of life experience, agreed to it, it was definitely the right move for the baby.

The whole family mobilized. That included the unmarried, childless, and entirely inexperienced Leland. He folded his long legs, crouching down right beside Winifred, and held her medical bag. Every time Winifred reached for an instrument, she invariably saw a large hand wearing a luxury watch ready to assist her.
