A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 57

Leland seemed to be running on pure adrenaline tonight, his laughter never quite fading.

Winifred focused on eating her soup. She figured he was just riding the high of coming back from a wedding—a young guy unable to suppress his excitement.

The car turned onto Auburn Avenue. The clinic was located in the middle of a narrow alley, a one-way street with barely enough room to squeeze through.

Winifred spoke up. "Just pull over here. You can wait in the car while I go grab the medicine."

She reached for the door handle. She pulled it a few times, but it wouldn't budge. Confused, she looked toward the driver's seat. Leland had the back of his head turned to her. "Why don't you want me to come with you?"

He sounded exactly like a little kid pouting because his mom wouldn't take him to the store.

Winifred patiently explained, "It's an old residential area. The street is narrow and full of people walking around. It's too tight for a car."

Leland's voice instantly brightened. "That's fine then."

He parked right there, hopped out of the car, and followed her. He was walking in with her, no matter what.

It was already dark, and the clinic's weekend hours ended at 8 PM. The staff at the pharmacy window were packing up to leave.

Winifred leaned against the counter. The person on shift happened to be the young pharmacist who had enthusiastically wished her a happy birthday the night before. The girl was super friendly, and Winifred asked her to prep a few holistic herbal patches for a baby's fever.

It was Leland's first time at the clinic. He stood with his hands casually tucked into his dress pants, looking around.

Two pretty girls came down from the second floor. Carrying small bags and wearing fresh, summery dresses, they were holding onto the handrail as they descended.

They locked eyes with him.

"Whoa! Oh my..." God.

One of the girls was so flustered she practically buried her face in her friend's shoulder. They whispered to each other as they hurried down the stairs. When they got close, both were giggling behind their hands.

Leland was entirely unfazed. Plenty of women drooled over his looks.

The girls walked past him, faces flushed, heads held high just enough to steal a glance, then giggled, then stole another glance, and giggled again. Once they were a few steps away, they stopped near the door, quietly shoving each other.

"You go! Ask the gorgeous guy for his number."

"I'm too scared! You do it!"

Winifred heard the gasp, turned around, and saw the clinic's IV nurse, Ms. Langdon, standing completely red-faced in front of Leland, her head whipped around to stare at her.

"Dr. Shultz... you're... working late again?"

"Yes, Ms. Langdon. Are you all heading out?"

"Mhm." The nurse scrambled toward the door. "Bye Dr. Shultz! Bye, Dr. Shultz's boyfriend!"

On Saturdays, Winifred was the only attending physician working the morning shift, as Quentin Adams took the day off. The afternoon was mostly for patients coming in for scheduled IV drips. The nurses locked up after the last patient left.

Running into a coworker wasn't a big deal to Winifred, but the nurse's comment was...

"What was that about?" she asked Leland. In the span of two minutes, he had somehow become her boyfriend.

She didn't even know she was in a relationship.

"Let's just get the medicine. I'll explain later," Leland smiled smoothly.

Fine. Back to business.
