A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 59

Winifred thought back to Leland's "I'll wait for you."

It could have just meant he was waiting to walk her to the car after she finished with his grandmother. Or, it could have meant he was interested in her, and was waiting to see if she felt the same way.

The odds that Leland had his eye on her were about fifty-fifty. This made her realize that Sylvia's sudden job offer might be heavily influenced by Leland's involvement.

She didn't want that. She wanted to climb the ladder based on her own merits, so that no matter who she faced or what obstacles arose, no one could ever use her position as leverage to attack her.

Sylvia patted her shoulder. "Darling, what are you thinking about?"

"I..." Winifred snapped back to reality and offered a polite smile. "I was just thinking that everyone in the Lockwood family is in perfect health. You really don't need a wellness practitioner."

Sylvia wouldn't take no for an answer.

She kept an arm around Winifred and started breaking it down. "Our extended family has 112 members. We employ two full-time doctors, and it costs a fortune, but they can only handle minor issues. Most of the time, we still end up going to the hospital.

"If you come work for us, I'll fire the other two doctors. When you look at it that way, our family is actually saving money.

"Furthermore, the Lockwoods own a top-tier cancer institute in Kingsbridge, and we're aggressively recruiting medical talent. Once you join us, you can balance both roles. We can help you fast-track patents for your holistic formulas and get them into clinical trials. Your talent and reputation will reach entirely new heights."

Put like that, Winifred's perspective completely shifted.

She had visited the Lockwood Mansion many times. Last summer, she spent over two weeks treating Leland's leg injury, so she had a decent grasp of how the family operated. They did indeed have two doctors on staff. And the Lockwood Cancer Institute was highly prestigious in Kingsbridge.

The main Lockwood family was undeniably a massive step up, and the offer perfectly aligned with her career ambitions.

She gave Sylvia her answer on the spot. "I accept the offer to join the Lockwood family."

"Wonderful!" Sylvia gently patted her hair, making no demand for her to remove her mask. Her face was full of genuine affection and delight.

Even if Holden and Iris tried to raise hell, giving them five years to exhaust themselves would surely leave them broken and ruined.

"Mrs. Lockwood, I'd like to start with a five-year contract," she said.

Sylvia's eyes flickered.

"Uh..."

Five years was a little short. What if Leland couldn't close the deal by then? She'd just fly away again!

Then, a brilliant idea hit her.

"Ah—how about this, darling? I'll ask Leland tomorrow. He deals with corporate contracts all the time. If it works for you, I'll have him prepare the paperwork, and you can just drop by when you have a moment to sign it."
