A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 62

Her eyes stung with unshed tears. She lowered her head slightly and opened her mouth, letting Seth feed her the spoonful of soup.

...

The next day was Sunday. Nelly hadn't asked her to come over, so Winifred assumed the old woman was feeling fine and didn't need her medical attention.

Instead, several patients messaged her to request in-home treatments, offering premium house-call rates. She took the jobs.

In a single day, she dashed between five different locations. When she left the house that morning, she was in the north end of the city; by the time she finished her last appointment that evening, she was in the suburbs, nearly twenty miles from downtown.

She ordered a rideshare back.

Just as she was dozing off, the chime of her phone startled her awake.

It was a barrage of messages from Sylvia Lockwood.

First message: [Dr. Shultz, hello! I spoke with Leland, and we can do a five-year contract. We'll do exactly as you asked...]

Second message: [I have to head to the Regal Manor first thing tomorrow morning. An old friend contacted me with an emergency, so I need to go sort it out...]

Third message: [I've already signed the employment contract and left it with Leland to handle the rest. He has the paperwork. Just find some time on Monday to stop by and see him...]

They were sixty-second voice memos, packing the screen tight.

It took Winifred a moment to listen to them all.

Tomorrow was Monday. She was completely exhausted today and wouldn't get to sleep until past midnight, and she still had to work in the morning.

Then, it hit her.

She had completely forgotten—Holden and Iris had sabotaged her job at the clinic. Quentin had gently told her to take a few days off.

She didn't have to go to work tomorrow.

She was just planning to go find Leland tomorrow afternoon, wondering if he would be free...

Then, another realization hit her.

No! Tomorrow was out of the question!

"No!" Annelise's big eyes filled with tears. "I love Ms. Miller! I love Yara, and Gwen, and Kirk! I want to stay there!"

A wave of anxiety washed over Winifred.

Iris was raising Jordyn, which meant Jordyn was the apple of Holden's eye. Holden was going to be showing up at that kindergarten a lot.

For instance, he would definitely be playing the 'father figure' for Jordyn at next month's sports event.

Seth and Annelise would be directly in the line of fire.

Still, getting Annelise to agree to switch schools wasn't an immediate crisis. They had time to figure that out.

The pressing issue was getting the kids excused for the day.

Winifred texted Ms. Miller, saying they had a family matter to attend to. She was taking a step back, choosing to avoid Holden and Iris entirely.

But to her surprise, at nine o'clock, Ms. Miller called her.

[Annelise's mom, I'm so sorry to bother you, but... Jordyn's family has come to the kindergarten. They are demanding to see Seth and Annelise to handle the conflict between the children face-to-face.]
