Chapter 55

With the Dreamland Spider Lilies no longer barring her path, Chloe slipped through the forest with newfound speed.

Clutching her climbing pick, Chloe swept her gaze across the tangled undergrowth, trusting the navigation and identification skills she had painstakingly learned from the Skill Tomes. Soon, she backtracked to the very spot where she had first discovered the Vitality Fuel.

Her marks were still there.

A silent sigh of relief escaped Chloe.

For her, simply finding her way back felt like a small victory.

Just as she was about to follow her marks and leave, a massive magic circle suddenly lit up on the wall where the Legendary Vitality Succulent had rolled into earlier.

Deep purple runes spread across the surface.

A cold shiver raced down Chloe’s spine. After everything this forest had thrown at her, her instincts screamed at her to flee. But before she could bolt, a brilliant flash blazed before her

eyes.

Chloe’s gaze snapped to the light, and she froze in place.

It was the item she had picked up earlier.

As she focused on it, a system notification popped up.

[Unknown Arcane Pendant: An unadorned magic crystal, bound and suspended by sturdy hemp rope. It looks aged, yet still carries faint traces of magic.

[Quality: Unknown]

The arcane pendant shimmered with a subtle purple glow. Thanks to her sharp senses and memory, Chloe traced the outline of a complex magic circle flickering across its surface.

It mirrored the Megalithic Magic Circle before her, every intricate detail aligning as if reflected in a flawless mirror.

When Chloe looked again, the description beneath the arcane pendant’s quality had changed.

[A small key left behind by Shana Blackwood, intended for those with top-tier talent, insane luck, and strong magical skills. She sincerely invites other witches to come and explore her research on forest magic.

[Use it?]

A fierce battle raged inside Chloe, torn between caution and curiosity.

She stood rooted to the spot, fingers tightening around the special item she had claimed earlier.

In her grasp was a one-time teleportation card, a single-use ticket to the unknown.

‘Should I risk it? Chloe wondered.

There was no telling if she’d ever set foot in this perilous magical forest again, or if another Witch’s Invitation would ever find its way to her.

Truthfully, Chloe had always been fond of witches.

Many of her most valued possessions had come from them, such as Beatrice’s “Arcane Botany Compendium”

After a heartbeat of hesitation, Chloe’s grip on the teleportation card grew firm.

‘Fine, she decided. ‘I should take the leap.

Her bet was on the Sorceress’s Pact Scroll she had received from Shana.

Back when she used that scroll, the pact was mutually binding.

It was a two-way agreement, requiring her to do everything possible to assist the other party as well.

To Chloe, it had never felt like an unfair contract.

‘Let’s do this, Chloe resolved, determination flaring inside her.

She mentally checked her territory. Everything was secure, and there wasn’t a single creature in sight. Without another moment’s hesitation, she pressed the use button.

Clutching the Unknown Arcane Pendant, Chloe was engulfed in a burst of dazzling light that swept her away.

She clutched the one-time teleportation card tightly.

A wave of otherworldly light washed over her, shimmering with colors she couldn’t name.

She forced her eyes open, the world around her blurring into a dreamlike haze.

Above her, a vast blue sky unfurled, dotted with billowing white clouds. A colossal dragon glided overhead, and a city floated serenely in the air.

Below, a tapestry of bustling towns and city-states sprawled across the land, with farmlands, schools, and distant snow-capped peaks all alive with possibility. The world stretched out, limitless and full of promise.

Then, in an instant, the vision shifted

Darkness swept over everything, swallowing the world whole.

Beneath a sky turned pitch black, a suffocating gloom devoured the towns. The dragon vanished, the land lay in ruins and the sea turned to liquid shadow.

The vision lasted only a brief moment like a CC cutscene from a video game.

Chapter 55

So, it had all been an illusion after all.

When Chloe’s eyes fluttered open, she found herself standing before a charming three-story duplex with an attic courtyard.

The home felt fresh and lived-in, as though its owner had just stepped out.

Lanterns dangled from the eaves, spilling golden light into the night.

The courtyard evoked memories of elegant villa neighborhoods Chloe had glimpsed in her old life.

There was even a garden.

The silence was so complete that Chloe caught the distant song of kingfishers. Roses bloomed everywhere, their petals glowing softly beneath the lanterns.

Unlike the wild plants outside, these flowers were untouched by strangeness.

Chloe stood still for a few seconds, then walked up to the courtyard gate.

A copper bell with a pull cord hung beside it, so she reached out and tugged it. A crisp, clear sound echoed through the courtyard.

Chloe’s muscles tensed, nerves stretched taut as bowstrings.

Almost ten minutes passed. Just as she began to think nothing would happen, the door creaked open, trembling on its hinges.

Behind it stood a dog about Chloe’s waist height.

It wore a monocle and a small necktie, with a small satchel hanging at its side.

A golden retriever stood there, its fur soft and silky despite the silver threads of age woven through its coat.

Dressed like a butler, the dog looked up at Chloe.

“Woof! You’re a friend of the Master! I can smell her scent on you!”

The old dog wagged its tail, obviously delighted. “Come on in!”

Chloe released the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, her nerves finally settling as she moved toward the entrance.

The golden retriever wagged its tail and led her inside. “Honestly, I thought no one would return. It’s been a century, and you’re the first human with extraordinary magic talent!

“If Master sees you, she’ll be thrilled. But she hasn’t returned in a long time.”

The dog led Chloe through the garden. When her gaze fell on the roses, another system nonfica
