By the time evening came, the house was full. I was amazed that Dominic had friends and relatives that were willing to leave their own family to come spend Christmas with us.

He must have really been close with them.

Maxine was settling in quite well, and Marcus who we later discovered was her mate, and

husband. He was a really sweet guy, he wasn’t a man of many words, but I could see how much he

loved her.

She introduced us to him, and I could see the protectiveness from Gio and Dominic at first as they wondered who the strange man that was with their baby sister was. But, as soon as they talked and Maxine assured them that Marcus was not forcing her, and she was here by choice. They calmed down and accepted him.

It was the most bizarre and emotional experience.

According to Maxine, she met him when she was nineteen, still struggling and living in shelters, trying to hustle for the life she wanted. It was a love at first sight, and it was all clear when she found out he was her mate. He took her in, and treated her like a queen.

It was the best time of her life, and she never regretted her decision to leave home.

“It was the best thing I did. The freedom. It felt good to have a life of my own. To not have to be controlled. To have someone that loved and accepted me, not because I was his daughter. But because I was Maxine. For the first time in my life, I finally knew what true love without conditions and limitations felt like.” She had said when they sat down to catch up on lost times.

“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. We tried to help you. To talk to him. To make him change his mind. But, it was like talking to a wall. He was adamant. He never listened. And we were worried. About you. About the future you were going to have. It broke our hearts when we couldn’t find you. We had thought the worst has happened, but still didn’t give our mind room for doubt. We believed you were alive, and hoped we’d find you. Then we gave up, and just hoped. Hoped that one day, you would find your way back to us. Back home.”

Maxine had tears in her eyes, and was smiling through the pain. “I’m so sorry. I should have known you’d help me. That you’d do anything to keep me safe. But I was too terrified of father to even look back. He was a monster. A man I was supposed to call father. A man I was supposed to trust and love. And he was going to sell me off. What kind of man does that to his own daughter? I was a kid, and he had no regard for my feelings. So, I ran. And I was scared. Scared that he was going

to come after me. To bring me back. So I made sure he could never find me. But, I should have known better. I should have had faith. You were my brothers, and the only family I had. I’m so

sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s all in the past now. We’re just glad that you’re here, and alive. That’s all that matters. You’re safe, and you have a wonderful husband. Who would have thought? You’re a wife and not our little girl anymore.” Giovanni said, and I could tell he wanted to cry.

Maxine’s eyes shone with pride. “Yes. I am.”

Then they turned to her husband. “Thank you for taking care of our sister. And since she has only sung praises of you, we do hope that you’re never going to hurt her.”

Marcus looked at Maxine and smiled. “I would rather die than hurt her. She is my whole world. And I would never forgive myself if anything ever happened to her. I will make sure that she is taken care of, and protected. That is a promise. I love your sister, and that is a fact. And, nothing is ever going to change that.”
