“Yes, unfortunately, I have a little bit of an emergency. But, I’ll be back.”

“Oh. Great! Can I come with you? I feel like I’ve been cooped up in this place for way too long.”

“It’s a really long drive though…” I tried to be subtle in turning her down, and not wanting to hurt her feelings.

“Even better, we could use that opportunity to catch up on lost times. Like the good old days.”

I looked at Hailey who has been standing a few feet away, and listening.

“I’m sorry, Tricia, but I think it’s better if you stay here. There’s a lot going on today and Hailey might

need help.”

“It’s fine, Dominic. Let her go with you.”

I turned to look at her, and raised a brow.

“Really?”

“Yeah, I mean, I don’t mind. I’ll have your family, and they’ll keep me company. And maybe she’ll feel more comfortable with you instead.”

“Are you sure, baby? It’s okay if she stays. Really.”

“No, go ahead. Take her. She’s dying to get out. It’ll be good for her.”

I looked at her one more time, and nodded. I turned back to Tricia. “Okay, let’s go.”

Tricia grinned, and rushed to get her jacket and boots. We made our way outside, and headed to

the car.

Hailey’s words kept replaying in my mind, and I was trying to not make her uncomfortable and keep my distance.

We

got inside the car, and sat in silence.

I started the engine, and turned the radio on, just for a little bit of noise.

After a few minutes, Tricia spoke. “Do you not trust me anymore?”

I looked at her, and turned the radio down. “What? No. Of course not. What makes you say that?”

“Because you don’t even want me near you.”

“That’s not true. Tricia, you need to understand that we are no longer teenagers. Yes, we were best friends, we still are because we never cut ties before you traveled. But, you need to understand that it’s been years. Years, Tricia. I’ve been married. Twice. And now, I’m back with my first love. I’m trying to make things work with her, trying to gain her trust again, and you showing up and having the same kind of relationship that we used to have, will not sit well with her. I want to gain her trust back, and the only way to do that is by not giving her reasons to doubt me. You are my family, and so is she. The only difference is, she’s also my wife. Well, wife to be. You have to understand the position that puts me in. I don’t want her thinking you and I have anything other than being the friends we’ve always been. It’s not fair to her, and I need to be cautious.
