CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHT

DOMINIC

“I’m sorry, Dominic. But, you have to understand. I didn’t know what else to do. The council was not helping. The doctors were not helping. You weren’t there. It was just me, all alone, with no one to help or guide me. You didn’t have a problem, or struggle, so you have no idea how difficult it was. The hunger, the cravings, it was so hard, and I just wanted it to end. So, yeah. I broke the rules. A lot. And, it’s not like anyone will ever find out. You know, if the council can’t do anything about it, and can’t fix the problem, then what’s the point? I have come to terms with the fact that this is my life now, and I have no choice. They’re not helping me, so, why should I even try? They don’t care. No one does. So, why should I care about killing a few people here and there? No one is going to find out. Not even the council.”

“Trish, they’re not going to care that you’re having issues. You killed a lot of people, Tricia. A lot. And, that’s not going to go unpunished. Even if you tell them your situation, they won’t care. Because, you broke the rules, and killed a bunch of innocent people, regardless of the circumstances. Whether or not you had a valid excuse or not, doesn’t change the fact that you killed people. God, I need a drink. I can’t even wrap my head around this.”

“Look, I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to kill anyone. But, I was a newborn. I was a vampire. I didn’t know how to handle myself, and the urges were too much. You can’t blame me. You have no idea what it’s like. You’ve never struggled. Never felt the hunger. You’ve never had the urge to rip someone’s throat open, and drain them dry. And I’m sorry for that. You’ll never understand what it’s like. You have no idea how hungry I am right now, and how many times a day I have to drink. I feel like my stomach is going to explode, and the only thing that can stop the pain, is a warm blood bag. And, yes, I have killed people, but so has the council. So, I’m not the only one who’s guilty. Everyone has killed. Including you. And, no one cares about any of that. No one will care about what I’ve done. Not even you.”

“Trish, look. I know it’s not easy, and that it’s hard. And, yes, you’re right. I will never know what that feels like. And, I’m sorry that you’re going through all of this. But what you’ve done is unacceptable. No matter what the reasons or circumstances are or the fact that the council is also guilty, you can’t kill people, Trish. That’s not okay. And, the fact that the council is also guilty, doesn’t mean you’re allowed to go out on a killing spree just to be satisfied.”

“I can’t live in just blood bags and animal blood, I’m sorry. This is how I was born. Born to do this, resisting it will only make it harder. Besides animal blood doesn’t even satisfy the hunger. It’s like drinking air. There’s no nourishment or anything. I can’t live like that. You can’t expect me to starve. That’s just cruel.”

“Tricia, what is wrong with you? Are you really choosing to kill people just to satiate your hunger?

You can’t be serious.”

“It’s not that easy. You have no idea how hard it is. I can’t even explain the feeling. But I’m sorry, Dominic. This is the only way. Either I drink, or I die. There’s no other option. And, as long as no one finds out, and links the deaths back to me, then it’s okay. No one will find out.”

“You’re not getting away with this. We have to report this. You need help.”

“Are you crazy? They’ll kill me! And, there’s no cure, Dom. This is how I’m supposed to be. How I’m meant to live. If they can’t fix me, then there’s nothing to fix. Let’s ditch the food and go to the bar. I think I need to take you up on that offer. I need a drink.”

I thought about it and sighed. With all I’ve been through, a few drinks would be great.

“Okay. Fine. Let’s go. I would need more drinks for all the shit you just told me.”

“Good. And, hey, it’s not all that bad. Just imagine, you can have all the fun you want with all the women in the world, and no one would suspect a thing. No one will ever find out. Not unless you tell. Isn’t that amazing? The possibilities are endless. It’s not like you haven’t done it already. Just think, the council can’t stop you. They can’t hurt you, and no one will ever know.”

“Well fortunately, I’m no longer about that life anymore. I’m a man now, and committed to one woman. Besides, the thrill of womanizing, and fucking other women was a rush. But, the guilt and shame afterwards made everything worse. So, it was not worth it. And, if it wasn’t for the fact that Hailey forgave me, and accepted me for my flaws, I would still be lost and lonely.”

“You’re seriously whipped, Dom. But, if that’s the way you feel, then good for you. That’s a huge step, and I’m happy for you. You know, as kids I would always dream of the day we would get married. I would always fantasize about the beautiful ceremony, and the amazing party we’d have. I can’t believe we’re no longer little kids playing tag, and chasing butterflies. We’re grown adults now, and our lives are going to take a completely different path. It’s almost like it’s the end. We’re growing up.”

“Trish, it was never a good thing to fantasize about marrying your best friend who never had more than a platonic feeling for you. Especially when that same best friend has feelings for another person, and has no idea of your feelings.”

She turned away and laughed. “Oh please, I was a raging teenager, okay? And you were one hot piece of meat. Besides, that’s in the past. It’s all forgotten. And, besides, it’s not like we can ever get married anyway.”

“I know. So, let’s go get a drink and forget all about this.”

CHAPTER HUNDRED EIGHT

We drove towards the bar and got out. I definitely needed a few drinks to clear my mind.
