CHAPTER HUNDRED-NINE-2
“C’mon, that’s enough drink. We should get going. It’s getting late, and we should both get some sleep. Let’s head home.”
“Just one more drink, please.”
“No, Tricia. You’ve had enough.”
I grabbed my car keys, and helped her stand. We walked towards the door, and I held her tight.
The bar was empty, and the place was dead quiet. The bartender was wiping down the counters,
and cleaning up.
We walked towards the car and got inside.
“Tricia, you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m good.”
“Okay, let’s head back to the house.”
pulled away, and headed towards the highway. We sat there, with her talking about anything and everything. She had told me stories, memories, and dreams, and I listened.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her to shut up, and to let me focus on the road. We arrived back at the house, and parked the car.
We headed inside and noticed the house was dead quiet. Everyone must have gone to bed. I took Tricia to her room, and she immediately fell asleep as soon as I tucked her into bed.
I looked around the house, and everyone seemed to be asleep.
It was only me and her now.
I decided that a nice, hot shower would help clear my mind, so I made my way towards my
bedroom.
I quietly opened the door, not wanting to wake Hailey up, but she was already standing with her arms crossed.
“Where have you been?”
“Nowhere. Just went to the bar after the office.”
“For five hours?”
“I didn’t realize how much time passed by, okay? Sorry.”

“Is that why you didn’t take any of my calls? Because you were having such a good time with your best friend, and your fiancé doesn’t matter?”
“C’mon, don’t do this, Hailey. Why are you so angry about this? I didn’t see any of your calls, I swear.”
I took out my phone and indeed, there were six missed calls from her, but it never rang out. And I don’t recall putting my phone on silent mode, so how come it was on silent?
“Because, Dominic. You’re engaged. To me. Not her. Yet, you’re spending more time with her, and acting like a couple than a friend and his best friend. It’s like she’s the fiancé, and I’m the best friend. All I needed was just a simple message or something, Dominic. You can’t ignore me like this, and expect me not to worry.”
“I know. And, I’m sorry. You’re right. But, Trish is struggling, Hailey. And, she’s been through a lot. She needs my help, and I have to be there for her.”
“You made me dress up, thinking our plans for dinner tonight was still on, only for you to stand me up and not take any of my calls. I’m trying, Dominic. But, you’re making this difficult. You’re making me question my worth and what’s more important. Me, or her.”
Fuck!
How the hell did I forget about the dinner I promised her?
Her hair was done, and her makeup was perfect. She already took off her dress and heels. “Shit. Fuck. I’m so sorry, baby. I didn’t realize. It was an honest mistake. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” “But you did, Dom. That’s the problem. You don’t realize what you’re doing, and that makes it even worse. We were supposed to be having a quality family time for Christmas. And now you’d rather spend your day with your best friend and get drunk, while the rest of us are sitting here, waiting for you to come home. And, even after all that, you still can’t bother to check in, and make sure we’re okay. It’s like we don’t even matter, and all you care about is her.”
“No, baby. That’s not true. Of course you and the others matter. But, sometimes things slip out of my mind. I swear, I didn’t mean to forget.”
“You know what, Dominic? Whatever. You go have your fun with her. It’s obvious that she’s more important than me. Go ahead. Enjoy. And, once she’s ready to go back home, you can also go with
her.”
She walked to the bathroom, and started cleaning up her face and taking off her makeup.
“Hailey, please. Don’t say that. That’s not true…”
“Save it, Dom. I’ve had a long day. I just want to go to sleep.”

“C’mon, babe. Please don’t do this. It was a mistake. It was an honest mistake. I’m really sorry.”
She walked out of the bathroom, and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Do you know how many times I’ve heard that, Dom? ‘It was a mistake’. ‘It was an honest mistake’. How long am I supposed to accept that as an excuse? You were supposed to be spending the whole day with me, and instead, you’re out doing God knows what with her. And then, when I call, you don’t pick up. When I message, you don’t reply. Do you have any idea how that makes me feel?”
“Hailey, I’m sorry, okay? I swear, it was never my intention to make you feel like this. It was a genuine mistake. I swear. It wasn’t on purpose.”
“Yeah, well, it’s too late. The damage is already done. Now, just let me be, and go have fun with your best friend. Have a good night.”
She laid down on the bed, and turned her back to me.
“Hailey, please…”
“Dominic, I’m tired. Okay? Can you just leave me alone, please?”
“Fine.”
I walked into the bathroom, and took a shower.
How could I have forgotten about the dinner with Hailey?
She must have been so disappointed. And, to make it even worse, I had her dress up for no reason,
and then, not only did I not show up, but I didn’t take any of her calls or reply to her texts.
I was a complete idiot.
I was an idiot for forgetting.
Did Tricia put my phone in silent mode without my knowledge?
That doesn’t make sense.
