CHAPTER SIXTEEN–1

HAILEY

This was the most awkward lunch of my life, and I wished it would end sooner.

Giovanni and Valerie were chatting amicably, as if they were old friends, and I was just sitting there, staring at them with narrowed eyes.

Sitting with my ex husband’s brother and having lunch like old time friends was definitely not on my bucket list, but seeing someone genuinely show interest in my best friend, be it the last man in the world I wanted her to be with, made me happy.

I’d always told her that there was someone out there for her, but she hadn’t met the right one just yet. So, seeing her smile and laugh the way she did, it was nice.

Even if the reason behind the smiles and laughter was Giovanni.

I just couldn’t wait for all this to be over, so I could finally return to work and forget all about this day.

“Hailey,” Giovanni’s voice dragged me back to reality. “How have you been? Genuinely. Don’t look at me as your ex’s brother. Look at me as a friend. I know we didn’t have the best relationship before, but it’s been five years. Things have changed. You’ve changed. I’ve changed. Hell, even Dom has. Don’t you think it’s high time you and him buried the hatchet and moved on?”

“You’re right. Things have changed. For the better. He left me. I didn’t leave him. And because of that, I will never forgive him, Giovanni. It’s not that easy.”

“What about you, Hailey. No Dominic talk. Just you. How are you?”

I paused, not knowing how to answer his question. How was I? That was a loaded question.

But I could say that I was living a better life than a few years ago.

“I’m… I’m great. Life was hard. Your brother left me with nothing and I had to struggle in a new country where I had no help. It was miserable. I was miserable. I was depressed and broke and alone. I had no one

to turn to. But somehow, I got through it. And now, my life is pretty much perfect. I’m the Chief Surgeon at a big hospital. I’m healthy and comfortable and couldn’t have asked for a better life,” I answered truthfully.

He was the last person I was supposed to be telling about the struggles I went through, seeing as it was his own flesh and blood who put me through it, but there has always been a part of me that respected

Giovanni.

He may have been a player and a womanizer like his brother, but he was honest about it. He was always

upfront with the women he was with, letting them know that they weren’t anything serious.

But Dominic, the man I married, the man who had been the love of my life, had not only cheated on me,

but lied to me and left me in the dirt when I needed him the most.

That was not something I could just move on from.

“I’m glad things have turned out great for you,” Giovanni said.

I scoffed, “Really?”

“What, I’m not allowed to be happy for you?”

“Why should you be?”

“Because, I know what my brother did to you was shitty. I’m not defending him, but he’s still my brother.

And I’m the only one in the family that understands the hell you went through. And I know it’s hard for you

to believe, but I genuinely am glad you’re happy. You’re not the same woman who was married to my

brother five years ago. I can see that.”

“And what’s different?”

“Well, besides the obvious weight loss, which is a good thing, by the way, you have an air of confidence

around you. A glow. And that’s probably the best look on you. So, that aside, are you married now? Kids?”

I froze, the fork halfway to my mouth. I couldn’t believe he was asking me this.

“You don’t have to answer that,” Valerie assured me.

“No, it’s okay,” I said, smiling at her. “I’m not married. And I have no kids too.” The first was true, but I’d be damned if I ever let any member of the King family know about my precious Liam.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN–2

No matter how much of a better person he was from his brother. He was still a King. And that was enough

reason.

“Ah,” he nodded. “I see. Well, it was nice seeing you. And thank you for accompanying me to lunch. But, I

really should be going. Business never sleeps.”

He rose from his seat, then leaned down to kiss the back of both Valerie and I’s hands.

“Ladies. It was an honor. Hopefully, our paths cross again. Soon.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Valerie said, waving him goodbye.

“Wait-“I muttered before I could stop myself, but I needed to get it out my chest. “Is Dominic in the

country too? Are you two together?”

Giovanni smirked, but shook his head. “Don’t worry your little head, Hailey. He’s not in the country. It’s just

1. me. And like I said, it was an honor. Until next time.”

With those words, he left, and my heart finally settled with a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

“Well, he’s hot as hell,” Valerie sighed, watching his retreating figure. “Damn. But of course, he’s off limits. I wouldn’t dare try and date the ex brother–in–law.”

“As much as I would hate for you to have the same fate as me, Giovanni is the better option between the two of them. I don’t mind you dating him, but just, be careful. And don’t expect a future.”

“A future, huh? Why the hell would I think about that when a man like that is involved? A girl like me will be

satisfied with a night.”

I shook my head, laughing. “I forgot how dirty your mouth was.”

“Well, I am a doctor, after all. A dirty mind comes with the territory. Anyway, thanks for this lunch. As weird as it was, it was actually a nice experience. I can see why you liked him.”

“Yeah, well, Giovanni wasn’t all that bad. Just his family,” I admitted. “Anyway, we should be getting back to

the hospital.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Let’s go.”

And we left, the conversation, for now, forgotten.

The rest of my day passed in a blur, thankfully, every procedure was successful so I could say today was a

win.

After checking on some patients, I made my way to Liam’s school, being extra careful with my surroundings, because Giovanni seems to bump into my everywhere and I didn’t want to take any chances.

Liam was already waiting for me at the gate when I arrived, and he waved frantically at me, calling my

name.

“Mom!” he yelled.

I chuckled, “Hey, kiddo.”

“Guess what happened at school today,” he said excitedly.

“What happened?”

“Our class went to the art room and I drew you and me,” he explained, showing me the picture he drew.

“Aww, that’s so cute,” I complimented, kissing the top of his head. C’mon, I’m going to prepare dinner for us tonight and invite Mrs. Alvarez’s kids over for movie night, what do you think?”

“Yay! You’re the best mommy ever!” he praised.

I laughed. “Thanks, baby. Now, let’s go.”

Hours later, after eating and washing up, the children were all huddled around the TV, watching some

cartoons.

It had been a long time since they all came over, and Liam was having a blast with his friends, which was

exactly what I wanted.

While they were busy with the show, I took the opportunity to slip out and call my best friend, Valerie.

She answered on the third ring, “Hello, babe. What’s up?”

“Nothing, just wanted to hear your voice,” I said, chuckling.

“Aww, I miss you, too,” she said. “I was just about to go to bed, though. What are you doing?”

“I was going to head to bed soon, too,” I answered, leaning back against the headboard. “Just wanted to talk for a bit. I just… I can’t help but feel like the past I’ve been trying so hard to escape is catching up to

1. me. And I don’t like it.”

“What do you mean? Did Giovanni bother you again?”

“No, but I’m scared that he might. What if Dominic is here? I can’t handle him coming back into my life,

Valerie. If he tries anything, I swear-”

“Shh, don’t stress yourself about it,” Valerie reassured. “Giovanni said he wasn’t in the country. Just

because his brother is here, doesn’t mean the bastard is. Don’t overthink. Okay? Just take a deep breath

and relax. Everything will be okay.”

“You’re right. You’re right. I’m sorry,” I sighed.

“Don’t be sorry. If anything, I should apologize. It was me who encouraged you to stay a bit longer. Maybe we should’ve left when you wanted to. I’m sorry, boo.”

“It’s okay. We had no idea this would happen.”

“We didn’t. But just try and relax. You have other things to worry about, like your son. He needs you. So, just focus on him. Everything will be okay. Promise.”

“Okay, fine. I will,” I agreed. “Have a good night, Valerie. We’ll see each other tomorrow.”

“Alright. Have a good night too, Hailey. Try and get some rest. Love you, girl.”

“Love you too, bye.”

We hung up the phone and I sighed, feeling more tired than ever.

Today had been a rollercoaster, and I couldn’t wait for everything to be back to normal again.

But it wasn’t, and a part of me knew things were just beginning.

I didn’t know how, but I knew something was going to happen.

And that something, was going to change everything.
