CHAPTER HUNDRED-FORTYEIGHT-2
When Adrian was born, it was like the sun had come out after a long, dark winter. They were
overjoyed, showering their son with love and affection.
Johnathan was an involved parent, and they were a close knit family. Hearing this after the death
of their only child was a hard pill to swallow.
I watched as they lowered Adrian’s coffin into the ground, a sense of sadness washing over me.
Dominic squeezed my hand, and I looked up at him, giving him a small, sad smile.
Maria’s quiet sobs were like a knife in my heart, and I could feel tears welling up in my eyes.
Johnathan wrapped his arm around his wife, his own eyes glistening with unshed tears.
I watched as the mourners filed past the grave, each one leaving a flower or a trinket on top of the
coffin.
Johnathan and his wife stood by the grave, their shoulders slumped in defeat. Johnathan’s eyes held a deep, unfathomable sorrow, a pain that could never be erased.
I could see the guilt in Dominic’s eyes, the self blame. As much as I’ve told him that this wasn’t his fault, he would always feel that it was.
It was finally our turn to drop off a token. Dominic’s hand shook a little as he placed a white rose on the coffin. His eyes were hidden behind his glasses, but I could feel the intensity of his emotions, the grief and the guilt.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “I’m so sorry, Johnathan. This should have never happened, and I’ll live the rest of my life in regret. If only I’d done more, if only I’d been able to
protect him.”
Maria reached out, taking Dominic’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s not your fault, Dominic. You did everything you could. I’m so sorry about my husband’s actions, the things he’s said and done. He’s hurting and grieving. He doesn’t know what else to do.”
“I understand,” Dominic said, his voice thick with emotion. “I would have done the same thing.”
I squeezed his hand, giving him a reassuring smile.
“Thank you for coming,” Maria said, her voice a whisper. “Thank you both for coming.” She said giving me a sad smile. “At least, I know my son is in a better place. He will look down at us with a smile, seeing everyone who has gathered to mourn his death.
“I’m sorry, Maria, Johnathan.” I said, trying to comfort them. “If there’s anything we can do, please

let us know. We’re here for you.”
“Thank you,” Johnathan said, his voice breaking. “That means a lot.”

We stood there for a moment, the silence stretching between us. Johnathan was slowly coming to
terms with his grief, and it would take time before he was able to heal. But Maria, I could see the hope in her eyes, the hope of a new beginning, of a chance to start again.
I felt a sense of calmness wash over me, a feeling that everything would be okay. Johnathan and his wife would recover from their loss, and Dominic and I would move on from this tragedy that
has affected our pack.
“I’m so sorry, Maria,” Dominic said, his voice laced with emotion. “I should have done more, should have been more vigilant. It was my duty as the Alpha to protect our pack, and I failed.”
“It’s not your fault,” Maria said, her voice quiet. “It was an accident, a tragic accident. Please don’t
blame yourself.
“If there’s anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to ask.” Dominic’s voice was firm and sincere.
“You’ve already done more than enough,” Maria said, a sad smile on her face.
As we left, I couldn’t help but think about how one could ever move on from the loss of their child. When I lost my parents, I felt like my world had fallen apart, that I would never be able to put the pieces back together.
But as I looked at the grief stricken faces of Johnathan and Maria, I knew that the road to healing would be long and arduous, but that they would eventually find a way to move forward.
“Hey,” Dominic said, pulling me aside as the crowd started to disperse.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.
“Yeah,” I said, a small smile tugging at my lips. “I’m okay.”
He pulled me into a hug, his arms strong and comforting around me. I could feel the warmth of his body, the beat of his heart. I could smell the faint scent of pine and musk. It was a familiar and comforting scent, a scent that made me feel safe and secure.
“We’ll get through this,” he whispered, his lips brushing against my hair.
“I know,” I murmured, my voice barely a whisper. “We always do.”
As we walked back to the car, Dominic’s hand in mine, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. As tragic and devastating as the death of Adrian was, it was a reminder that life was fragile and short.
We had to cherish every moment, and live every day to the fullest.
