CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTY-1
HAILEY
The drive to the hospital was a long and scary one. But being in the doctors field for over five years has taught me to stay calm in this kind of situation, so I was able to hold it together for Valerie.
The car ride was a blur of frantic glances, Valerie’s sharp intakes of breath, and my own thundering heart. I kept one hand on the wheel, the other on her arm, murmuring reassurances I wasn’t sure I believed myself. The town’s familiar streets flew by, but my focus was on one thing; getting us to the hospital. The two other nurses on duty took over from there, wheeling her into a delivery room. I was a mess inside, but I was her best friend, her support system. I had to be strong for her.
I rushed her into the emergency room, my professional demeanor kicking in. “I need a gurney over here! She’s in labor, thirty seven weeks, contractions are less than two minutes apart!”
A team of nurses and a doctor rushed to our side, and Valerie was whisked away into a delivery
room.
I was left standing in the hallway, a chaotic mix of panic and adrenaline coursing through me.
I had delivered countless babies in my career, but this was different. This was my best friend. This
was Valerie.
I quickly went to my office, putting on my scrubs, my hands shaking slightly.
I found Valerie in the delivery room, her face contorted in pain. Her eyes were wide with fear, and I could see the panic in her gaze.
“It’s going to be okay, Val,” I said, taking her hand. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Hailey,” she panted, her voice trembling. “It hurts so much. You didn’t tell me it would hurt this
much.”
“I know, sweetie, I know,” I said, my heart aching for her. “But you’re strong. You’re the strongest person I know. You can do this.”
I examined her, checking to see how many centimeters dilated she was.
“Okay, you’re six centimeters dilated,” I said, my professional voice masking my own anxiety. “We’re almost there. Just a little bit longer.”
“Where the hell is Giovanni! I sure as hell won’t be pushing out his baby if he’s not here to witness it.” She said in between breaths, her eyes flashing with anger. Giovanni was yet to arrive, and I absolutely understood her anger. Imagine having to push out a watermelon sized baby from your

“He’s on his way, Val,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “He’ll be here. He wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
“Will you deliver this baby for me? It’s you I want, Hails.”
“I would love to, Val. But I can’t. We are best friends, I would not be able to control my emotions if I see you in so much pain while delivering your baby, and that will put you and the baby at risk. So, I’ll be right here with you, but you have to let the doctor do her job.”
“Fine,” she said, sighing. “But you better be holding my hand the entire time.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” I said, smiling.
I looked at the monitor, and I could see that the baby’s heart rate was still stable. I let out a sigh of relief. At least, that was a good sign.
“Hailey,” Dr. Collins said, her voice calm and reassuring. “I need you to go and get her husband. He needs to be here. I’ll take care of her.”
“No,” Valerie said, her voice firm. “She stays. My boyfriend is on his way, I’m going die if I don’t see at least one familiar face. She stays here, or I’m leaving this room.”
Dr. Collins looked at me, her eyes pleading. I could see the concern in her gaze, the fear that
Valerie might do something reckless.
