CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTY-2

“I will,” I said, nodding and she left.

A few minutes later, the door burst open, and a frantic Giovanni rushed in, his face pale with worry. “I’m here, I’m here,” he said, rushing to Valerie’s side, taking her other hand. “I’m so sorry, baby. The traffic was a nightmare. I had to leave my car in traffic and run the rest of the way.”

“It’s about time,” Valerie said, her voice laced with annoyance. “I was about to have this baby without you.”

“I’m here now,” he said, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “And I’m not going anywhere.”

The contractions started to come faster and harder, and Valerie gripped his hand tightly. He dared not make a sound, but I could see him wincing from the pressure of her grip.

“I love you,” he whispered, his eyes filled with tears. “You’re so strong, baby. You’re doing so good.”

I watched them, my heart swelling with warmth. They were so in love, and it was so beautiful to

see.

“You’re eight centimeters dilated,” I announced, my voice calm and professional. “It’s almost time to push. Just a little bit longer. Do not be afraid of the pain, try to ride with it.”

“I can’t,” she cried, her body trembling. “I can’t do this. It hurts too much.”

“Yes, you can,” I said, my voice firm but gentle. “You’re the strongest person I know, Valerie. You

can do this.”

Giovanni looked at me, his eyes filled with gratitude. Sweat dripped down my brow, my own heart racing with adrenaline. My professional mask was in place, but inside, I was a nervous wreck.

I watched as Dr. Collins and the nurses prepared for the delivery. The room was a flurry of activity, but my focus was on Valerie, on her pain, on her fear. My own fears were pushed to the back of my mind, buried under a mountain of adrenaline and duty.

I wasn’t a doctor in this moment, the job be damned. I was a best friend. And my friend was having

a baby.

I took a deep breath, the smell of antiseptic filling my lungs, and I squeezed her hand.

“You can do this, Val,” I said, my voice a steady anchor in the storm of her pain. “I’m right here with you. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Okay, Valerie,” Dr. Collins said, her voice calm and authoritative. “It’s time to push. I need you to

give me a big, long push. Let’s bring this baby into the world.”

With a guttural cry that was a mixture of pain and effort, Valerie bore down, her face flushed and contorted as she pushed with all her might. She squeezed Giovanni’s hand so hard I thought she might break it, but he didn’t flinch.

“Good, Valerie, good!” Dr. Collins encouraged. “We are getting there! Can I get a second push?”

“I can’t!” she sobbed, her body trembling with exhaustion. “I can’t do it.”

“Yes, you can,” I said, my voice firm and reassuring. “You have carried this baby for nine months, and you can do this. You’re so close. One more push. For me. For Giovanni. For your son.”

“Okay,” she said, her voice a mere whisper. “Okay.”

She took a deep breath, and with another powerful push, she gave it her all. I could see the top of the baby’s head.

“He’s crowning!” I exclaimed, a wave of relief washing over me. “He’s almost here!”

“One more big push, Valerie,” Dr. Collins said. “And then you will meet your son.”

With a final, determined push, Valerie let out a primal scream, and in a rush of fluid and blood, the baby was born.

The room was filled with the sound of a newborn’s cry, a beautiful, welcome sound that brought tears to my eyes. He was so big and so perfect. He was a beautiful baby boy.

“He’s here,” I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. “He’s finally here.”
