CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYTWO-2
I had to call Dominic.
My hands were still trembling as I fumbled for my phone. I didn’t even bother going back into my
office. I needed air, space. I walked down the hall, my strides long and purposeful, as I dialed his
number. He picked up on the second ring.
“Hey, baby,” he said, his voice warm and relaxed. “You on your way home? I was just about to start
grilling.”
“Dominic,” I said, my voice clipped. “We have a problem.”
I could hear the shift in his demeanor instantly, the warmth evaporating, replaced by the hard, alert
tone of the Alpha. “What’s wrong?”
“Yasmine was here. At the hospital.”
Silence. A long, heavy silence that spoke volumes. knew he was processing, weighing the
implications. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I said, pushing through the doors and stepping out into the bright afternoon sun. “But she
made a threat. Against Phoenix.”
Another beat of silence. “Where is she now?”
“I ran her off. Told her if I ever saw her here again, I’d kill her. But she’s not going to stop, Dom.
She’s not just a scorned ex anymore. She’s dangerous.”
“I know,” he said, his voice grim. “I’ll double the patrols. Put the pack on high alert. No one gets on
or off this territory without my say so.”
“What about Valerie and Giovanni?” I asked, my stomach churning at the thought. “And the baby.”
“They’re with me,” he said. “They’re safe. I’m not letting them out of my sight.”
“Okay,” I said, taking a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of my heart.
“She was banished from the pack. There should be a reason why she could suddenly gain access
to the territory.”
“You’re right,” he said. “Now that I think of it, the council did call me for an urgent meeting
today. And from the way they sounded, it wasn’t to ask about how the new baby is. They want
something. I have a feeling that this is all connected.”
The pack council was a group of elders, the oldest and most powerful wolves in the pack. They
were the ones who had ultimately made the decision to banish Yasmine, their ruling final and
binding. The thought of them reversing that decision was unthinkable.

“They wouldn’t,” I said, but even I could hear the doubt in my own voice. “Would they?”

“Power corrupts, Hailey,” Dominic said, his voice heavy with a weariness that went beyond the day’s
events. “It’s a sickness. And some of them have been wielding it for a very long time. The meeting
is tomorrow, so that’s enough time toget our evidence together. I’m going to call my lawyer, I want
to see if there’s a loophole, a way we can make this banishment permanent. I’m not going to let her
waltz back in here and terrorize our family.”
“Good,” I said, a new wave of determination washing over me. “I’m on my way home. I’ll help. I’ll call
some of my contacts, see if I can find out anything about what the council is planning.”
“Be careful,” he warned. “If Yasmine is involved, she’s not working alone. She has allies. People who
are just as ruthless as she is.”
“I will,” I promised. “See you soon.”
I hung up the phone, my mind racing. I had to get home, to my family. To Dominic. We were in this together, and we would face it together. I took a deep breath, the crisp air filling my lungs, and
started walking towards the parking lot.
Throughout my ride home, I kept my eyes peeled, my senses on high alert. Every car that followed me for more than two blocks, every person who made eye contact for a second too long, was a
potential threat. The paranoia was a cold knot in my stomach, but it was better than being
