CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYEIGHT-1
HAILEY
The next day, I decided to take Liam to the park. He had been cooped up in the house for too long, and I wanted to give him a taste of normalcy, a chance to just be a kid. The sun was shining so bright today, the air was crisp and clean, and for a little while, we could pretend that everything
was okay.
We were playing on the swings, Liam’s infectious laughter filling the air, when I saw her. Yasmine.
She was walking on the path that circled the park, dressed in a simple, unassuming outfit, a small, friendly smile on her face. She looked like any other pack member out for a stroll. But I knew
better. She was hunting.
She saw us, and her smile widened. She started walking towards us, her movements slow and deliberate. I felt a surge of adrenaline, a primal instinct to protect my son. I wanted to grab him and run, to get as far away from her as possible. But I held my ground. I would not let her see me
flinch.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked, her voice a silken thread of false sincerity.
“Of course not,” I said, my tone clipped. “The park is for everyone.”
She sat on the swing next to Liam’s, her gaze soft and friendly. “He’s a beautiful boy,” she said, her eyes on my son. “So full of life. He looks just like his father.”
Liam, oblivious to the tension, grinned at her. “I can swing higher than anyone!” he declared.
“I don’t doubt it,” Yasmine said, her smile unwavering. “You’re a strong little wolf, aren’t you?”
She was playing a game, a dangerous game of insinuation. She was planting seeds, testing
boundaries. I had to shut it down, quickly and decisively.
“Time to go, sweetie,” I said, my voice firm. “We have to get home for lunch.”
“But Mom,” Liam whined, “I don’t want to go.”
“Another time,” I said, helping him off the swing. I didn’t look at Yasmine, didn’t acknowledge her
presence.
“Things don’t have to be this way, Hailey. You shouldn’t deprive the poor boy a moment of fun just
because of your disapproval for me.”
Her voice was a silken taunt, designed to provoke me, to make me look unreasonable in front of
my own child. I turned to face her, my expression a mask of cold composure.
“His well being is my only priority,” I said, my voice low and even. “And I don’t believe you have a

She flinched, a flicker of something in her eyes. Was it hurt? Or was it anger? It was hard to tell
behind the carefully constructed facade.
“I’m not the monster you think I am, Hailey,” she said, her voice quiet, her eyes pleading for
understanding.
“No?” I challenged, my gaze unwavering. “Then what are you, Yasmine?”
“Look, I know I fucked up by approaching you like that at the hospital and I’m genuinely sorry about
that. I feel like I haven’t gotten the chance to properly apologize to you about everything. About all
you had to go through because of my foolishness. m grown now, and I know better. That’s not the person I want to be.” She looked so genuine. She had the whole act down pat, from the remorseful
glint in her eyes to the slight quiver in her bottom lip. It was a masterful performance.
“I’ll tell you what,” she continued, her tone softening “let me prove to you that I am no longer the
person you think I am. We all need a break once in a while. How about we set our differences aside
