CHAPTER HUNDRED–EIGHTY
HAILEY
Valerie and Giovanni were the only ones who knew about my pregnancy, and trust me, it’s been absolutely
bliss. Valerie was my best friend, and Giovanni was Dominic’s brother, my friend, and a second in
command, and they were the only ones who knew about the pregnancy.
Valerie had been my rock through everything. She was there for me when I was at my lowest, when I was hurting, and when I was lost. She was a fierce, loyal, and a loving friend who would do anything for me.
When I told her about the baby a few days ago, she was ecstatic. She was jumping up and down, a wide
grin on her face that absolutely warmed my heart.
“I’m going to be an auntie again!” she squealed, pulling me into a tight, fierce hug. “This is amazing, Hailey. You and Dominic deserve this. You really do.”
And now, we were on our second mini vacation. We arrived at the cabin late in the afternoon, the sun a warm, golden glow in the sky. The cabin was a small, rustic, and a charming little house that was nestled in the woods, a perfect escape from the chaos of our lives.
Liam immediately took off, running towards the lake, a flash of pure, unadulterated joy that was infectious. He was so happy, so free, so full of life. It made my heart ache.
Dominic and I stood on the porch, watching him, a comfortable silence settling between us. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the heavy, tension filled atmosphere of the pack house.
“This is nice,” I said, a small, grateful smile on my face. “I needed this. How are you such an amazing planner, Dominic? How do you always know what I need?” I said, leaning my head on his shoulder.
He wrapped an arm around me, pulling me close. “I know you better than anyone else, Hailey. I know what makes you happy, what makes you sad, what makes you angry. I know what you need, even when you don’t
know it yourself.”
He was right. He did know me. Better than I knew myself sometimes. He was my other half, my soulmate, the one person in this world who truly understood me. Despite all we’ve been through. The ups and downs, the break up, the fights, we have always managed to find our way back to each other. No matter how many times we have fallen, we have always managed to get back up, stronger and more in love than ever before.
We stayed like that for a long moment, just watching Liam, a shared, comfortable silence that was more intimate than any conversation. He was trying to skip stones on the lake, a look of intense concentration on his face. Every few skips, he would turn around and give us a thumbs up, a proud, triumphant smile on
his face.
“He’s a good boy,” Dominic said, a look of fierce pride in his eyes. “He’s a good kid. He takes after you.”
I laughed, a small, genuine sound that was a little rusty from disuse. “He takes after you, Dominic. He’s
stubborn, and headstrong, and he has a heart of gold.”

“I would not want him to be me, you know. Don’t sugarcoat me. I don’t have a heart of gold. I have killed a
lot of people, done a lot of bad things. I want him to be better than me. I want him to be you,” he said, a
flicker of something I couldn’t quite place in his eyes. It was a mix of regret, remorse, and a deep, abiding
love for our son. It was a look that made my heart ache.
“You are a good man, Dominic,” I said, my voice a little shaky. “You are not the man you used to be. You
are not the man you were when we first met. You have changed. You have grown. You have become a
better man. A better husband. A better father. And I am so proud of you. Liam would always sing praises
of you, of how he wants to be like you when he grows up, of how he wants to be the Alpha, just like his
daddy. You are a great role model for him without even realizing. He looks up to you. He loves you. So
much. I hate that you don’t give yourself the credit you deserve. You deserve so much more than you think
you do. And I hate that you don’t see it.”
He was quiet for a long moment, my words sinking in. I could see the conflict in his eyes, the war between
the man he was and the man he wanted to be. It was a battle he had been fighting for a long time, a battle
he was finally starting to win.
For the first time in a while, I saw tears welling up in his eyes. I’ve only seen him cry a handful of times.
When he found out about Liam, when we got married, when we had our vows. He wasn’t the type of man
to show his vulnerability, to show his weakness. He was always so strong, so stoic, so in control. But right
now, he was letting me see the man behind the mask. He was letting me see the real him.
“I love you, Hailey,” he said, his voice a low, choked whisper. “I love you so much. I don’t know what I would
do without you. I don’t know who I would be without you.”
“You would be fine, Dominic,” I said, my voice a little shaky. “Whatever you were in the past, was the result
of your upbringing. Your father was a ruthless man, he wanted you to be a horrible man like he was, he
turned you into the monster you were. But you are not that man anymore. You are not your father. You are
a good man. And I am so lucky to have you. Liam is so lucky to call you his daddy, and our unborn baby is already so lucky to have you as their father.”
