CHAPTER HUNDRED–EIGHTYONE

He pulled away, a small, grateful smile on his face. He wiped the tears from his eyes, a gesture that was
both vulnerable and endearing.
“Alright, alright,” he said, a small, humorless laugh escaping his lips. “Enough of this. Let’s not ruin this beautiful evening with our sad stories. We have a weekend to enjoy. And we have a son who is probably wondering where we are.”
He took my hand, his grip firm and steady, a silent promise of his love and devotion. We walked towards the lake, the setting sun casting a warm, golden glow over the water. Liam was skipping stones, a look of
interise concentration on his face. Every few skips, he would turn around and give us a thumbs up, a
proud, triumphant smile on his face.
“Look, Mommy! Daddy!” he shouted, a wide grin on his face. “I got five skips!”
“That’s amazing, buddy!” Dominic shouted back, a proud, fatherly smile on his face. “You’re a natural.”
We watched him for a while, a shared, comfortable silence settling between us. We were breathing in
another atmosphere, where peace and tranquility was the main focus.
“I was thinking,” I said, breaking the silence. “Maybe we could build a campfire tonight. Roast some
marshmallows. Tell some stories.”
“I’d like that,” he said, a small, genuine smile on his face. “I’d like that a lot.”
We spent the rest of the afternoon by the lake, a perfect, idyllic scene that felt like a dream. We skipped
stones, we fished, we talked, and we laughed. It was a normal, everyday activity, but for us, it was a rare and precious gift.
The life humans had. A simple, ordinary life. A life we didn’t have, a life we couldn’t have. But for a few
days, we could pretend. We could forget about the pack, the killer, the drama, and the danger. We could
just be a family.
As the sun began to set, Dominic built a campfire, the flames crackling and popping, a warm, comforting
sound that filled the air. Liam sat on a log, a stick in his hand, a look of intense concentration on his face
as he tried to roast a marshmallow. I sat next to him, my hand resting on my growing belly, a feeling of
contentment washing over me. This was what I wanted. This was what I needed.
Dominic sat down beside me, his arm wrapping around my shoulders, a warm, comforting feeling. He pulled me close, his body heat seeping into me, making me let out a sigh of content.
“I love you,” he whispered, his breath warm against my skin.
“I love you too,” I replied, a small, genuine smile on my face.
We sat there for a long moment, just watching the fire, a shared, comfortable silence that was more

intimate than any conversation. Liam was telling us a story about a dragon and a knight, his voice a low, excited murmur that was both endearing and entertaining. He was so engrossed in his story, so lost in his
own little world, that he didn’t even notice the tears welling up in my eyes.
This was what I had always wanted. A life with a husband who loved me, a son who adored me, and a baby on the way. A life that was free from the chaos and the danger, a life that was full of love and
happiness.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t notice the twig snapping behind me. A sound so small, so insignificant, that I would have dismissed it as a forest noise. But Dominic heard it. His whole body went
rigid..
He was on his feet in a flash, a protective, predatory stance that was both impressive and terrifying. He was no longer the loving, doting husband and father. He was the Alpha. A fierce, powerful, and a dangerous leader who would stop at nothing to protect what was his.
“Stay here,” he ordered, his tone a low, serious growl. He moved towards the sound, his movements silent and fluid, a hunter stalking its prey. He disappeared into the darkness, a shadow that was barely visible in the flickering firelight.
Liam, oblivious to the tension, continued to roast his marshmallow, a look of intense concentration on his face. But I was on high alert. My heart was pounding in my chest, a wild, frantic beat that was both deafening and overwhelming. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, a sharp, metallic taste
in my mouth.
I scanned the darkness, my eyes straining to see through the thick canopy of trees. I could hear nothing but the crackling of the fire, the chirping of the crickets, and the pounding of my own heart. I was scared. I
was so, so scared.
I pulled Liam close, my arms wrapping around him in a protective, maternal embrace. He looked up at me,
a confused, questioning look in his eyes.
“What’s wrong, Mommy?” he asked, a small, hesitant tremor in his voice.
“Nothing, sweetie,” I said, my voice a little shaky. “Everything’s okay.”
He seemed to accept my answer, going back to his marshmallow, but I could feel the tension in his small body. He knew something was wrong. He was a smart boy, a perceptive child who was attuned to my
emotions.
I held him tighter, my knuckles white from the force of my grip. I was praying, a silent, desperate plea to
the goddess to keep us safe. To bring Dominic back to us. To protect my family.
After what felt like an eternity, Dominic emerged from the darkness, a look of relief on his face. He was
alone.
“Is everything okay?” I asked, my voice a little shaky.
“It was just a deer,” he said, a small, reassuring smile on his face. “One which will be out tonight.”
