CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHTYTWO
TRICIA
It’s been two days since Dominic and Hailey left for their little “family getaway”. The pack house was quiet, a little too quiet for my liking. But it was also an opportunity. An opportunity to do some digging, to find out what was really going on. Dominic had been so evasive, so guarded lately. And I wanted to know why. I wanted to know what he was hiding.
I decided to pay a visit to Giovanni. He was Dominic’s brother, his second in command, and the only
person who might be willing to talk to me. I found him in his office, a stack of papers on his desk, a look of
intense concentration on his face.
“Tricia,” he said, a hint of surprise in his tone. “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to talk to you,” I said, a small, practiced smile on my face. “About Dominic.”
He let out a sigh, a look of weary resignation in his eyes. “What about him?”
“He’s been acting strange lately,” I said, my tone a little hesitant. “He’s been so guarded, so secretive. I’m
worried about him.”
“Tricia, you need to let this go,” he said, a hint of frustration in his tone. “Dominic is fine. He’s just been under a lot of stress lately.”
“What kind of stress?” I pressed, a look of innocent curiosity on my face. “Is it about the pack? Or is it about something else? I’m just genuinely worried about my friend. Contrary to whatever any one of you think, I am still his friend. Hailey and I may have had our differences, but I still wish her well. And Dominic and I have been friends our whole lives. I care about him. I care about his happiness.”
“Well, I understand you hat you care about Dominic. But he’s married now, so you shouldn’t intrude too much in his life now, because he has a wife to care about that.”
Giovanni said, a subtle warning in his tone.
“I get that, Giovanni. And I have no interest in Dominic other than a friendship. I’m not trying to cause any trouble. I’m just trying to be a good friend.” I said, a look of sincerity on my face.
“Look, Tricia. I do not want to have this conversation with you. Dominic is fine. He is just stressed. With everything that has been going on in the pack lately, it’s normal.” Giovanni said, a finality in his tone
“What is going on in the pack?” I asked, a look of genuine confusion on my face. “I’ve been so cooped up in here, I feel like I’m completely out of the loop.”
“Something my brother and I can handle. If that’s all, you can leave. I have a lot of work to do.” Giovanni said, a dismissive wave of my presence.
I stood up, a small, defeated sigh escaping my lips. “Alright. I’m sorry to have bothered you.”
CHAPTER HUNDRED EIGHTYTWO
I walked out of the office, a look of thoughtful contemplation on my face. Giovanni was hiding something.
I could see it in his eyes, the way he avoided my gaze, the way he deflected my questions. And I was going to find out what it was.
I was walking down the hallway, my mind racing, when I saw Valerie. She was coming out of her bedroom, a basket of laundry in one hand and her son in the other. She saw me, and for a moment, a flicker of annoyance crossed her face before she smoothed it over with a neutral expression.
“Tricia,” she said, her tone a little cool. “Fancy seeing you out of your wing”
“I was just talking to Giovanni,” I said, a small, forced smile on my face. “Trying to catch up on all the pack
gossip.”
She let out a small, humorless laugh, a sound that was as cold as ice. “Well, I’m sure you got an earful.”
“Actually, no,” I said, a look of disappointment on my face. “He was very tight lipped. He wouldn’t tell me anything.”
“Imagine that,” she said, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. “Why wouldn’t he tell you anything? You and Dorhinic go way back.”
