CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHTYTHREE-1

TRICIA

“It’s been months since you went there, and not once have you given me a positive feedback. Are you forgetting why I sent you there? Because it seems like you are forgetting,” My mother hissed into my phone, her voice a low, venomous whisper.

“How many times will I tell you that his wife is an insecure bitch who didn’t want me anywhere near their

house? And Dominic listens to every damn thing she says, so how was I supposed to carry on with our

plans when I’m basically living in the boys quarters?! So it’s a bit hard to carry out your plan, mother.” I shot

back, my own frustration boiling over.

I had escaped to the one place I knew the cameras wouldn’t reach: the small, disused conservatory at the back of the pack house. It smelled of damp earth and forgotten bouquets, a fitting backdrop for my

simmering rage.

“Don’t you dare raise your voice at me, Tricia,” she snapped, my full name a slap across the miles. “I am the one who got you this ‘in’. I am the one who pulled the strings to get you back into that pack, back into his life. After the stunt you pulled, and the boy you killed, you are lucky I didn’t wash my hands of you completely. Do not forget that I have the evidence that could end your pathetic excuse for a life. So I suggest you find a way to make this work.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, the glass of my phone cold against my ear. She was right. She always was. The memory of that night, the boy, the panic… it was a weapon she held over my head, a constant, thrumming

threat.

“Hailey is pregnant,” I said, the words tasting like poison in my mouth. That was the sole reason I called her. I had snuck into their bedroom in the middle of the night, and I didn’t need to dig too much before finding the pregnancy test report sitting in her closet. The news was like a punch to the gut, but it was also a new piece of ammunition. I had to think fast on how to use this new information.

The line went silent. For a full ten seconds, the only sound was my own ragged breathing. Then, she laughed. It wasn’t a happy sound. It was the brittle, chilling laugh of a predator that’s just spotted a

weakness in its prey.

“Pregnant,” she mused, the word rolling off her tongue like a fine wine. “Well, well. That complicates things, doesn’t it? But it also… clarifies them.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach.

“Think, Tricia,” she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Think of what that means. A new heir. An obstacle. A beautiful, fragile obstacle that could be… misplaced.”

My blood ran cold. “You want me to… no. I won’t do that. I’m not a monster.”

“No? You let a boy die and didn’t report it. What makes you think you aren’t? And what, then? You plan to

rest of your life as the pack charity case? The sad, tragic friend pining after a married Al n now? I didn’t raise you for that. I raised you to be a Luna. To have power”
