“Don’t worry about the boat, sweetie, just come to me,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm and level.
“I’m gonna get it,” he insisted, his eyes locked on the elusive boat.
“No, Liam, don’t-”
Before I could stop him, Liam lunged for the boat, his fingers closing around the plastic toy. As he reached for it, his foot caught on a rock, sending him tumbling deeper into the water. His head went under, and the
current started to carry him away.
“Liam!” I screamed, trying to get into the water but I was immediately stopped by the guards.
“Please, stay here. We’ve got this!” He jumped into the water, the splash nearly knocking me over. The other guard pulled me out of the water, his arms strong and firm around me.
“Let me go,” I cried, struggling against his grip. “I need to help my son!”
The guards ignored my protests, and I watched in horror as Liam disappeared into the murky depths.
The second guard, swam after him, his arms and legs propelling him through the water with powerful strokes. I held my breath, praying that they would reach him in time.
After what felt like an eternity, they surfaced, their arms clutching Liam’s limp form.
“He’s not breathing,” he said, her voice tinged with panic. “Help me get him out of the water.”
My heart was racing, a cold fear gripping me. I couldn’t lose him. Not my son.
“Come on, baby,” the guard said, her voice strained. “Stay with me.”
She swam towards the bank, her body straining under the weight of the child in her arms. The other guard helped her out of the water, laying Liam’s limp body gently on the ground.
I started to run towards them, my heart in my throat.
“Liam!” I shouted, tears streaming down my cheeks.
“He’s not breathing,” the guard said, her voice breaking.
“Move aside,” the other guard ordered, his hands quickly moving to perform CPR.
I watched, helpless, as the guard administered CPR, the only sound the steady beating of his palms against Liam’s tiny chest.
“Please, baby, don’t leave me,” I sobbed, my body shaking with fear and grief.
He wasn’t waking up. The CPR wasn’t working. I could feel the panic rising, a cold, paralyzing fear that
threatened to consume me.
The other guard was on the phone, her voice urgent and rushed.
“I need an ambulance. Now. We have a child, not breathing.”
