CHAPTER HUNDRED-NINETYONE-2

“You don’t look surprised. Which means… you already knew,” she said, her eyes widening with realization.
“I’ve heard things,” I admitted, my voice low and gravelly. “But I didn’t think it was this bad. I didn’t think they would be so bold.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, her voice laced with hurt.
“Because I was handling it,” I said, my tone a little sharper than I intended. “I didn’t want to worry you. Not with the baby on the way.”
“Well, you should have,” she said, her voice rising with anger. “Because now my son is lying in a hospital
bed, and my pack thinks I’m a murderer. How am I supposed to lead them, Dom? How am I supposed to
be their Luna when they hate me so much? How am I supposed to be a good mother to my children when
they are all in danger because of me?”
“They are not in danger because of you, Hailey,” I said, my voice a low growl. “They are in danger because of me. Because of who I am. Because of what I am. This is my cross to bear, not yours.”
“Then why are they attacking me?” she shot back, her eyes flashing with fury. “Why are they trying to destroy me? Because they see me as a weakness. They see me as a way to get to you. And they’re right. Because if anything happens to you, or to our children, I would burn this whole world to the ground. I would kill every last one of them.”
Her words hung in the air, a raw, primal declaration of her love and loyalty. And in that moment, I saw the wolf she truly was. Not the scared, vulnerable girl I had first met, but a fierce, protective mother, a queen in her own right. She was not a weakness. She was my strength.
“You’re not a weakness, Hailey,” I said, my voice softening. “You’re my strength. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I’m sorry I didn’t protect you from this. I’m sorry I failed you. I’m sorry I failed Liam. I’m sorry my pack is seeing you as a threat, as a murderer. I’m sorry I couldn’t even protect our own son from himself. I’m sorry it took something like this for me to realize what was truly important.”
My anger turned inwards, a hot, searing shame that burned in my gut. I was the Alpha. It was my job to protect my pack, my family. And I had failed. I had let the poison spread, letting it fester in the darkness, too arrogant to see the danger that was right in front of me.
“No, Dom,” she said, her voice softening. “You didn’t fail. We both failed. But we can’t dwell on the past. We have to focus on the future. We have to make sure Liam is okay. The pack members mind have been poisoned by God knows who, we need to find out who is responsible for this.”
My mind was made up. I was done playing defense. I was going on the offensive. I was going to find out who was behind this, and I was going to make them pay. I was going to rip out the poison, root and stem. And I was going to start tonight.
I pulled into the pack’s garage, the engine roaring to a halt. I turned to Hailey, my eyes locking with hers.

“I want you to go to our room. I want you to take a shower, change your clothes, and get some rest. I’m going to make some calls, and then I’m going to find out who is responsible for this uncouth rumor. You’re carrying our child, you’re stressed and I need to make sure you and the baby are okay”
“What are you going to do?” she asked, her eyes searching mine.
