CHAPTER HUNDRED NINETYONE
CHAPTER HUNDRED-NINETYONE-3
“They were just trying to de escalate the situation,” she said, her voice laced with a hint of doubt.
“They were supposed to protect you,” I countered, my tone leaving no room for argument. “That’s what I
pay them to do. Not to stand by and watch while my mate is being harassed and slandered. I’ve been too
lenient, Hailey. Too forgiving. And it’s almost cost us everything. It’s almost cost us our son.”
“Please, Dom,” she pleaded, her hand resting on my arm. “Don’t do anything rash. Not tonight. We need to
be there for Liam.”
“I will always be there for Liam,” I said, my voice a low growl. “But I’m also going to be there for you. And for our unborn child. And for this pack. Even if it means I have to become the monster they think I am.”
I leaned in and kissed her, my lips lingering on hers. It was a promise, a vow. She stared at me softly, as if
trying to read my mind.
“I love you,” she whispered, her voice a raw whisper.
“I love you too,” I said, my heart aching. “Now go. Get some rest. I’ll be up soon.”
She nodded, her eyes still filled with worry. She got out of the car, her movements slow and weary. I watched her walk away, her silhouette a fragile, lonely figure in the dim light of the garage.
I waited until she was out of sight, then I took out my phone and dialed a number. He picked up on the first ring, his voice a low, gravelly rumble.
“I need you,” I said, my voice cold and hard.
“I’m on my way,” he replied, then hung up.
I got out of the car and walked into the pack house, my jaw clenched tight. The house was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the refrigerator and the distant murmur of the television. I walked into my office, the familiar scent of old books and wood polish a welcome comfort. I poured myself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid a warm, comforting burn in my throat.
Giovanni arrived a few minutes later, his tall, imposing figure filling the doorway. My brother knew I wouldn’t be calling at this hour unless it was an emergency.
He looked at me, his eyes dark and serious.
“What’s going on, Dom?” he asked, his voice a low rumble. “You sound… different.”
“Because I am,” I said, my voice cold as steel. “We almost lost Liam today. My son literally died and came
back to life.”
“What?” His usual swagger vanished, replaced by raw shock. “How?”
“He almost drowned at the park. Hailey and the guards got him out, but he wasn’t breathing. They brought him back at the hospital. He’s stable, but he’s not out of the woods yet.” I took another swallow of whiskey,
A
the burn a small anchor in a sea of rage. “But that’s not the only reason I called you.”
I told him everything. The whispers, the accusations, the open defiance. The poison that was spreading through the pack, a cancer I had allowed to fester.
“For some reasons, rumors have been spreading about Hailey. Claiming she is responsible for Yasmine’s death,” I said, my hands clenching into fists. “They attacked her today. Verbally. While she was with Liam. Right in front of the guards, who did nothing.”
Giovanni’s face hardened, his eyes flashing with a cold, dangerous light.
“Who?” he asked, his voice a low growl.
“That’s what I’m going to find out,” I said, my voice flat and cold. “I’m done playing games. I’m done being the ‘understanding’ Alpha. I’m going to rip this pack apart until I find every last one of them. And then I’m going to make them pay.”
Giovanni nodded, his expression grim. “What do you need me to do?”
“I need you to find out who’s behind this. Use your contacts. Your resources. I want to know who started the rumors. Who’s spreading them. And I want to know who the two were that confronted Hailey today. I want their names. And I want them brought to me.”
“It’ll be done,” he said, his voice a low promise. “What about the guards?”
